Weevils
On Six-Game Losing Streak With Loss At North Alabama
February 10, 2008
FLORENCE, Ala. –
The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team
allowed the North Alabama Lions to score six runs in the
bottom of the third inning, aiding to a 14-4 loss, extending
the Weevil’s losing streak to six straight.
The Weevils did not reach the scoreboard until the top of
the sixth inning when sophomore Lance Labeff (West
Monroe, La.) crossed the plate on an RBI-groundout by
freshman Ben Miller (El Dorado, Ark.). Labeff led off
the inning with a single.
The Weevils struck again in the top of the seventh inning
when the team was forced to score at least four runs to
continue the game, which was scheduled for nine innings, but
ended after seven innings due to the NCAA’s 10-run rule.
Senior Chris Whatley (Sachse, Texas) led off the
seventh with a single, then later scored on an RBI-single
from senior Ryan Pilcher (West Monroe, La.).
Two batters later, sophomore Craig Caldwell (West
Monroe, La.) hit an RBI-single that scored freshman Josh
Hathcox (Bryan, Texas), who reached base on an error.
The Weevils scored its final run of the inning when freshman
T.J. Weed (Mangham, La.) crossed the plate on a wild
pitch. The Weevils needed one more run to continue the game
into at least the bottom of the seventh inning, but failed
when Miller grounded out to the second baseman to end the
game.
Caldwell was the only Weevil to get more than one hit after
going 2-for-4 at the plate with one RBI.
Recording the loss for UAM was freshman starter Ross
Jacobs (Monticello, Ark.), who failed to finish the
first inning before being relieved. Jacobs (0-1) allowed
four first inning runs (one earned) on only one hit.
With the loss, UAM drops to 0-6 overall this season and
looks to record its first win this Wednesday (Feb. 13) when
the team hosts Henderson State for a non-conference
double-header starting at noon at Weevil Field.
