ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team concluded the 2010 season with 15-10 and 6-5 losses to Henderson State on Sunday.
In the 15-10 loss, the Boll Weevils (20-26, 4-16 GSC) outhit the Reddies (31-16, 12-8 GSC) 15-11, but the pitching staff allowed 10 walks and the offense left eight runners stranded that proved to be the difference.
Seniors Tyler Henry and Blaine Ivey tied for the team lead in hits after both went 3-for-5 at the plate. Henry had three singles and an RBI, while Ivey had two singles and a solo homerun in the top of the third inning.
Senior Noah Sanders had just one hit, but his three-run homerun allowed UAM to have a 3-0 lead after just one half of an inning.
Sophomore starter Craig Pellegrin (4-4) was saddled with the loss after allowing nine runs (eight earned) off six hits with one strikeout and four walks in three full innings of work. HSU’s Anthony Gilliland (4-1) earned the win after allowing six runs off 10 hits with seven strikeouts and only one walk in 6 2/3 innings of work.
In the second game, UAM scored four of its five runs in the fourth inning. Senior Drew Harper and Sanders each had an RBI double in the inning. Henry collected an RBI single, while senior Matt Lewis was responsible for the other run, scoring on a wild pitch after doubling earlier in the inning.
Harper gave UAM a 5-4 lead with a solo homerun in the top of the fifth inning. The Reddies score two unanswered runs in the bottom of the fifth to seal the win and the series sweep.
Harper finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Senior Kevin Lienard (1-7) threw a complete game, but took the loss after allowing six runs off eight hits with four strikeouts and six walks. HSU’s Evan Early (3-0) earned the win in relief after throwing 2 2/3 perfect innings with three strikeouts.
