ASHLEY NAMED GSC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
September 1, 2008

Augustus Ashley
MONTICELLO – Senior free safety Augustus Ashley has earned the first Gulf South Conference defensive player of the week award of the 2008 season after anchoring the University of Arkansas at Monticello defense in the 21-7 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday.

Ashley (6-0, 185, Jacksonville, Fla.) wasted no time to define his role in UAM’s defensive secondary, as the transfer from Central Florida picked off two passes for 15 yards, forced a fumble and was in on seven tackles in the Weevil’s season opener.

“This is what we’ve been waiting for since the day (Ashley) told me he was coming to Monticello,” said fourth-year head coach Gwaine Mathews. “I knew he would make an immediate impact for our football team, and he, along with the rest of our defense, really shined on Saturday.”

The following is a portion of the announcement from the GSC office:
Ashley earns his first ever accolade, making an impact on the ground and through the air in UAM’s 21-7 upset at Division I-FSC rival Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Ashley and company return to the gridiron this Saturday, September 6, for the Weevil’s home opener against Missouri Science and Technology from Willis “Convoy” Leslie Cotton Boll Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
