BOX SCORE

MONTICELLO –
The University of Arkansas at Monticello football fell short of securing a chance to win its second consecutive conference win with a missed 33-yard field goal as time expired, giving the Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys a 38-35 win.

After forcing two Wonder Boy punts with the score in favor of Tech 35-28, sophomore running back Johnny Polite (McGehee, Ark.) capped off a 10-play, 85-yard, four-minute drive with a two-yard touchdown scamper, followed by a Nick Green extra point to tie the game at 35.

Tech’s all-america punter/kicker Michael Podobnik answered with a 20-yard field goal on Tech’s ensuing possession with just under two minutes left in regulation after an eight-play, 60-yard drive that lasted 2:31.

UAM took over and sophomore quarterback Scott Buisson (Metairie, La.) led the Weevils on a 75-yard drive including a run of 14 yards and pass of 18 yards to senior wide receiver Tim Harris (Kansas City, Mo.).

Fourth-year head coach Gwaine Mathews then called on freshman kicker Derek Jambon (Marrero, La.) to attempt his first field-goal attempt of the season with just three seconds on the clock. The attempt sailed right, sealing the win for the Wonder Boys.

Tech reached the scoreboard first with a 49-yard pass from Cole Barthel to Tracey Stiger with 13:02 left in the opening quarter on a four-play, 70-yard drive that lasted 1:58.

UAM answered with a 42-yard touchdown run from Buisson to tie the game at seven with 11:30 left in the first quarter. That drive went seven plays, 41 yards, and lasted 3:14.

Tech rounded out the first quarter scoring with a 22-yard pass from Barthel to Landon Turner, followed by a successful two-point conversion to give Tech a 15-7 lead with 8:09 left in the first quarter.

Tech opened the second quarter scoring with a quarterback sneak from Barthel from one yard out with 11:27 left in the second quarter to give Tech a 22-7 lead.

The Wonder Boy lead increased with 25 seconds remaining in the half after a three-yard touchdown run from Stiger to put Tech up 29-7 going into the locker room.

UAM outscored Tech 28-9 in the second half, leading to the late comeback.

UAM opened the second half with an eight-play, 60-yard drive capped off by an 11-yard pass from Buisson to Harris, moving the score to 29-14 with 11:34 left in the third quarter.

Tech scored its only touchdown of the second half on the following possession with a 28-yard pass from Barthel to Stiger, increasing its lead to 35-14. The score would remain the same following a botched extra point attempt.

Buisson found Harris for the second time of the game in the end zone during the next possession for an 11-yard touchdown, moving the Weevils to within two scores at 35-21.

After holding the Tech offense scoreless over the next two drives, Buisson found senior receiver Clarence Denmark (Jacksonville, Fla.) in the end zone for an 18-yard score, bringing the Weevils to within one score at 35-28 with 14:54 remaining in the contest.

Buisson finished the night as UAM’s best rusher for the third straight game, carrying the ball 20 times for 154 yards, including one touchdown run. Through the air, Buisson completed 21 of 33 passes for 258 yards, while throwing three touchdown passes and two interceptions.

Harris led the UAM receivers with five catches for 68 yards and two touchdowns, while Polite also caught five passes for 60 yards, including a long reception of 20.

Defensively, junior strong safety Scooter White (Lakeland, Fla.) led both teams with 15 total tackles (nine solo) and also recorded one pass deflection.

UAM recorded its season high in team rushing yards with 308, while also setting a season high in first downs with 35.
