Box Score

MONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas at Monticello football team moved to 2-0 after a 42-24 win over Missouri S&T on Saturday night, marking the best season start since 2000, when UAM started the season 4-0.

Aiding the Weevil win was 634 yards of total offense, led by sophomore quarterback Scott Buisson (5-10, 175, Metairie, La.) who threw for 312 yards, including four touchdown tosses. Buisson completed 20 of 28 passes, and only threw one interception.

The 634 total yards on offense is the highest game total since the Weevils broke the Gulf South Conference record with 812 total yards against Harding on September 22, 2007.

Clarence Denmark                                                                                                                                                             Johnny Polite
Buisson’s favorite target during the game was senior receiver Clarence Denmark (5-11, 185, Jacksonville, Fla.), who would have made fantasy football participants excited with seven catches for 154 yards, including one touchdown reception, which was a 46-yard pass from Buisson with 11:00 left in the first half to put the Weevils up 14-10.

Also racking up the offensive stats was sophomore running back Johnny Polite (5-5, 190, McGehee, Ark.) who carried the ball 19 times for a total of 155 yards, making his average per rush close to nine yards. Polite’s longest rush was a 26-yard scamper on UAM’s first play of the second half.

Missouri S&T opened the scoring with a 17-yard field goal from Joe Drahos with 5:37 left in the first quarter. UAM answered on the next possession with a nine-play 75-yard drive, topped off by a one-yard run from Buisson. That drive ate 3:15 off the clock.

S&T regained the lead on its next drive with a 35-yard touchdown strike from Jason Schleuter to Jordan Beard with 14:26 left in the half.

UAM quieted the S&T momentum with a 21-0 run that included Denmark’s 46-yard score, a seven-yard touchdown toss from Buisson to junior receiver Spencer Garrison (5-10, 183, Redwood City, Calif.) and a 23-yard strike from Buisson to senior receiver Tim Harris (6-2, 210, Kansas City, Mo.).

S&T kept it close with another scoring drive capped off by a four-yard pass from Schleuter to Jake Draillmeier with 1:07 left in the third quarter. That drive went nine plays for 56 yards and took 3:52 off the clock.
UAM answered with a 14-0 run, which included a 29-yard aerial strike from Buisson to senior receiver Jaleel Harris (5-11, 185, Jacksonville, Ark.) with 13:27 left in the game, followed by a 14-yard touchdown run by true freshman Andrel Johnson (5-9, 200, Metairie, La.) with 10:29 remaining.

S&T closed the scoring in the game with an eight-yard touchdown toss from Schleuter to Bryan Crider with 7:36 left in the contest.

Looking inside the numbers, UAM won the battles of first downs (32-16), rushing yards (298-63), passing yards (336-246), total offense (634-309) and time of possession (30:45-29:15).

Defensively, sophomore Vincent Jackson (6-2, 215, Fordyce, Ark.) led all defensive players with 10 total tackles. Jackson was also in on a tackle for a loss. Junior Larry White (5-11, 225, Atlanta, Ga.) was closely behind Jackson with eight total tackles.

With the win, UAM gained a 2-1 advantage over S&T in the all-time series between the two teams.

For the first time in at least eight years, the Weevils are in a tie for first place among GSC teams. Other 2-0 GSC squads include No. 3 North Alabama and No. 1 Valdosta State.

The Weevils travel to Cleveland, Miss. next weekend for a non-conference contest with GSC opponent Delta State on Saturday, September 13. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.

The game can be heard live on the radio at KHBM-FM 93.7 in Monticello, which will be streamed live over the Internet at uamsports.com. The pre-game coach’s report starts at approximately 5:30 p.m.
