WEEVILS OPEN CONFERENCE PLAY SATURDAY AGAINST REDDIES
September 18, 2008

GAME NOTES (UAM vs. HSU)

MONTICELLO – For the University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils, the quest for a Gulf South Conference championship begins Saturday with a 6 p.m. kickoff from Carpenter-Haygood Stadium in Arkadelphia, Ark. against the Henderson State Reddies.

Unlike the Reddies, who have already opened their GSC season with a 45-20 loss at North Alabama last weekend, the Weevils still remain 0-0 in the GSC win-loss column.

However, the Weevils (2-1, 0-0 GSC) did sustain their first loss of the season against GSC member Delta State last weekend by a final outcome of 37-31, in a game where the Statesmen won the last two minutes of the contest, including a 65-yard winning touchdown toss with less than a minute remaining.

Since the match up with the Statesmen was a non-conference contest, the Weevils keep their hopes alive of a GSC championship. Those hopes rest heavily on the results of this weekend. A loss puts the team in a difficult situation. Since the turn of the millennium, only twice has the GSC title been taken by a team who has not gone undefeated in GSC games.

Saturday’s opponent, Henderson State (1-2, 0-1 GSC), holds a 40-30-2 all-time series record against UAM in a series that dates back to 1914.

Like UAM, Henderson State also played and beat Arkansas-Pine Bluff this season, with a 34-0 throttling at home in Arkadelphia. HSU opened its season with a 38-14 loss at Central Arkansas, followed by the UAPB win and most recently the loss to North Alabama.

Since joining the GSC in 1995, UAM sports a 6-7 record in conference-openers. The last time was in 2006, when the team beat Ouachita Baptist 27-6 in Monticello. The only time the Reddies and Weevils have met to open UAM’s conference season was in 1995. UAM won 23-18 in Arkadelphia.

The game can be heard live on the radio at KHBM-FM 93.7, which will be streamed live over the Internet at uamsports.com. The pre-game coach’s report starts at approximately 5:30 p.m. with kickoff to follow at 6 p.m.
