Finishes Winter Off-Season Strong
March 31, 2008
MONTICELLO, Ark. — The University of Arkansas at
Monticello football team has just completed its eight-week
winter off-season conditioning program with 13 players given
team awards for their hard work.
Junior wide receiver Clarence Denmark (Jacksonville,
Fla.) was given the team’s greatest award after winning three of
the team’s events. Denmark was named the “Super Weevil” after
earning a total of 56 points in the program, tallying 95 dips, a
4.28 40-yard dash time, and a standing broad jump of 10 feet 10
inches.
“Clarence really showed up to work hard this winter,” said
Weevils offensive line and strength coach Derek Warehime.
“I’ve spent a significant amount of time at the D-1 level, and
Clarence’s numbers compete with and exceed any wide receiver I
have ever been around.”
The UAM coaching staff also awarded 12 players for tallying at
least 41 points in the program. The players given the award of
“Game Breaker” are as follows:
The
UAM football strength and conditioning program is based on a
point system that consists of seven events. These events are
power clean, parallel squat, bench press, incline press, dips,
40-yard dash, and standing broad jump. The most points any
player could attain in any event was 10, with the goal to get as
many points per event as possible to become either a player (41
points), game breaker (48 points), or a super weevil (56 points)
The UAM football team returned from spring break on Sunday,
March 23 ready to begin spring drills.
“We, as a coaching staff, are excited about where we are as a
team,” said head coach Gwaine Mathews. “We expect to have
this eight weeks of hard work to carry over onto the football
field this spring and summer, so we can be prepared to win ball
games in the 2008 season.”
