Convoy
The nickname for the late
Willis Leslie, possibly the most
beloved
figure in UAM athletics. Leslie played fullback for the Boll
Weevils
in the late 1940s, became an assistant following graduation and
replaced
Jim Benton as head coach in 1954. Leslie led the Boll Weevils
to
a 34-11-1 record in five seasons and won four straight AIC
championships
from 1955 through 1958. A World War II veteran, he
got
his nickname while participating in a Merchant Marine convoy
during
the war. UAM’s football stadium was renamed Convoy Leslie-Cotton Boll
Stadium in his honor in 1999.
