Lightnin'
Struck the Outhouse
One of the most famous
lines ever uttered about a UAM football
game
came from the late Henderson State coach Ralph ‘Sporty’
Carpenter.
The date was November 5, 1977. Carpenter’s Henderson
Reddies
were undefeated and ranked No. 1 in the NAIA Division I poll
when
they came to Monticello. UAM was just 2-6-1 and a heavy
underdog.
But someone forgot to tell the Weevils. Led by All-America
tailback
Terry Alexander, UAM stunned the Reddies 23-10. Alexander
rushed
for 253 yards and 3 touchdowns in the game, and afterward, a
disappointed
Carpenter explained the loss to the press by saying
"Lightnin’
struck the outhouse, and we were in it."
