UAM GOLF SEASON ENDS WITH PLAY IN GSC CHAMPIONSHIPS

MONTICELLO, Ark. —
The University of Arkansas at Monticello women’s and men’s golf teams ended their respective seasons with an outing at the 2008 Gulf South Conference Championships held at the Hot Springs Country Club over the past weekend.
 
The 2008 season was rugged for both teams, with best performances for the men’s team in the Lions Classic on February 24-26 and the Natural State Golf Classic on April 14-15.
 
The season began with play in the second annual Lions Classic at the Hardscrabble Country Club in Fort Smith. The men’s team finished fifth, while the women finished eighth.
 
Chris Halley posted a ninth place finish, leading the men with scores of 79 in the first round and 78 in the second round, while Leigh Sadler led the women with scores of 149 and 141.
 
The men played a month later in the Mulerider Invitational in Magnolia on March 24-25, posting a fifth place finish.
 
Cameron Hurst finished 14th, leading the Weevils with scores of 81 in both rounds, while Halley finished only four spots behind with scores of 81 and 85.
 
On April 14-15, both teams competed in the Natural State Golf Classic at the Red Apple Country Club in Searcy, resulting in an eighth place finish for the men, while the women finished ninth.
 
Hurst again led the Weevils, posting a tie for 19th place with scores of 74 and 76 on the par 71 course. For the women, Lindsey Rymes tied for 33rd place with scores of 115 and 109.
 
Both teams recently returned from the GSC Championships held in Hot Springs, where the men posted a 13th place finish, while the women finished ninth.
 
Hurst led the Weevils for the third time this season with scores of 84, 79, and 76 on the par 72 course. Kim Gibson led the women and turned in her season best performance with a 77 in the second round. Gibson shot 136 in the first round.
 
Hurst finished the season with an average score of 79 per 18 holes, while the top scorer for the women, Rymes, finished with an average score of 114 per 18 holes.
