BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
University of Arkansas at
Monticello junior forward
Jarrell Turner has been named
the Gulf South Conference-West
Division Player of the Week for
the second time this season.
The Chicago, Ill. native
averaged a double-double of 24.5
points and 10 rebounds per game
over the past week in a 73-83
loss to Delta State at home and
a 60-48 win over Ouachita
Baptist on the road.
In the loss to Delta State,
Turner tied what was then his
career-high of 23 points and
also grabbed eight rebounds in a
complete-game effort of 40
minutes. He capped the week by
re-setting his career-high with
a 26-point effort in the win
over OBU. Also in that win, he
added 12 rebounds for his second
double-double of the season.
With his back-to-back 20-point
scoring efforts, Turner
increased his overall
team-leading scoring average to
15.8 points per game. He also
leads the team with an average
of 7.4 rebounds per outing.
Since GSC play began on January
9, Turner is averaging just
under 21 points per game.
Turner has reached
double-figures in scoring in 10
games this season and has led
the team in scoring seven times.
Valdosta State’s Tyrone Curnell
was named the GSC-East Player of
the Week for the second
consecutive time, third overall
this season and sixth for his
career.
Turner and the Boll Weevils
return to the hardwood Thursday,
January 21, when the team makes
its second consecutive trip to
Arkadelphia, this time to face
Henderson State. Tipoff is
scheduled for approximately 8
p.m. at the Duke Wells Center.
