The University of Arkansas at
Monticello men’s basketball team
racked up 34 points off the
bench in a 60-57 win over
Henderson State to give the Boll
Weevils their third consecutive
win on the road in Gulf South
Conference play.
Leading the
way for the Boll Weevils (8-6,
3-1 GSC-West) was current
GSC-West Player of the Week
junior forward Jarrell Turner,
who scored 19 points after
connecting on 7-of-12 field goal
attempts and 5-of-12 foul shots.
Turner added five rebounds and
three blocked shots in his
complete-game effort of 40
minutes.
The other two
scorers to reach double-figures
in the win were both
non-starters. Senior Anthony
Lacey was the next highest
scorer with 16 points and added
four rebounds in his 23 minutes
off the bench. Senior Gil Verner
added 11 points, including nine
points from three
three-pointers.
As a team,
UAM shot 43.5 percent from the
field (20-of-46), 23.1 percent
from three-point range (3-of-13)
and 53.1 percent from the
free-throw line (17-of-32).
The Reddies
(7-10, 0-4 GSC-West) shot 38.6
percent from the field
(22-of-57), 33.3 percent from
three-point range (5-of-15) and
72.7 percent from the free-throw
line (8-of-11).
HSU’s Jeff
Shelton led all scorers in the
game with 22 points off seven
field goals, three treys and
five foul shots.
HSU’s leading scorer
coming into the game, Lance
Smith, recorded a double-double
of 16 points and 17 rebounds
after knocking
down 8-of-20 field goal
attempts.
The Boll
Weevils return to the hardwood
this Saturday, January 23 for a
4 p.m. contest against Harding
inside Steelman Field House in
Monticello.
