PENSACOLA, Fla. – The
University of Arkansas at
Monticello softball team reached
30 wins on Wednesday at the West
Florida Spring Fling with an
11-3 win over Freed-Hardeman and
an 11-4 win over
Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
The Cotton Blossoms improve to
30-5 this season, marking the
12th time in the program’s
15-year history to record at
least 30 wins. Freed-Hardeman
dropped to 9-12, while
Wisconsin-Oshkosh fell to 4-5.
In the 11-3 win over FHU, UAM
had 13 hits, leading to one run
in the first and fifth innings,
two runs in the third, four runs
in the fourth and three runs in
the sixth for the team’s 12th
run-rule victory of the season.
Senior Becca Tipton led the team
offensively, going 3-for-4 at
the plate with three RBI,
highlighted by a two-run double
in the bottom of the fourth.
Senior Emilie Hobbs, junior
Kendra White and senior Bethany
Falcon all went 2-for-3 in the
win. White smashed a three-RBI
double in the bottom of the
sixth.
Freshman Faith Lund (1-0)
recorded her first win of the
season after allowing two runs
(one earned) off six hits with
six strikeouts and no walks in
her four innings of relief.
In the 11-4 win over UWO, the
Cotton Blossoms only scored in
two innings, but an impressive
eight-run second inning and a
three-run fifth led to the
team’s 30th win of the year and
28th win in the last 30
contests.
In the eight-run second, the
Cotton Blossoms had three at
bats of at least two RBI, with
two-run singles out of sophomore
Meagan Wilson and Hobbs and a
two-run double by Jackson, her
second two-bagger of the inning.
Falcon and junior Sarah Hayslip
led the team in hits, both going
3-for-4 at the plate.
Jackson (16-2) earned the win
and picked up her 17th complete
game of the season, allowing
four runs off five hits with
four strikeouts and two walks in
her seven innings of work.
With Wednesday’s games, the
Cotton Blossoms concluded the
non-conference portion of the
2010 schedule and will resume
GSC play this weekend with a
four-game home series against
Ouachita Baptist, starting with
a double-header on Saturday,
March 27 at 1 p.m. at Blossoms
Field.
