Blossoms Get 32-Point Win Over SAU - Second Straight GSC Win

MONTICELLO, Ark. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello Cotton Blossom basketball team dropped a home Gulf South Conference game to Harding to start the second round of GSC games. Final score of the game was 67-61 in favor of the Lady Bisons.

 

In a back and forth game that featured 13 lead changed and four tie scores, Harding outscored the Blossoms in each half.

 

The Blossoms shot 30 percent from the field in the first half, while the Lady Bisons took one more shot than UAM, but had one less missed shot in the half, going into the locker room at halftime shooting 34 percent from the field.

 

        In the second half, both teams improved their shooting. UAM shot close to 40 percent in the second half, while the Lady Bisons shot almost 45 percent.

 

        The Blossoms attempted 30 three-pointers in the contest, only connecting on six for a final 20 percent from beyond the arc.

 

        Junior Sharlene Murphy (Coldwater, Miss.) sunk two free throws with 3:27 left in the game to give UAM its final lead of two points. However, the Lady Bisons then posted a 10-2 run to end the game and seal a win.

 

        Leading the way offensively for the Blossoms was senior Shakia Sanders (Chester, S.C.), who finished with 11 points after a 5-of-14 performance from the field.

 

        Following her closely was Murphy and junior Andrea Dubose (Hickory, Miss.), who both reached double-digits with 10 points.

 

        Coming into the ball-game, freshman Erika Brown (Shreveport, La.) was the team’s best board player at 6.7 rebounds per game. Brown only increased her average with her game total of 13 rebounds, which tied the game-high.

 

        Leading the way for Harding was Catherine McMenamy, who finished with 16 points, while Leah Fugett had 14 points, followed by Kristen Donnell with 11 points.

 

        With the loss, UAM drops to 11-10 overall and back to even at 4-4 in GSC play. The Lady Bisons improve to 15-6 overall and 5-3 in GSC action.

 

        The Blossoms have this weekend off to prepare for their next game, which is home against Ouachita Baptist on Thursday, Feb. 14 with a 5:30 p.m. tip-off in the Steelman Fieldhouse.
