Blossoms Fall To No. 24 Arkansas Tech in GSC Road Game
January 26, 2008

RUSSELLVILLE, Arkansas – The University of Arkansas at Monticello Cotton Blossoms dropped a Gulf South Conference road game to No. 24 Arkansas Tech with a final score of 74-54.

The Blossoms started the game strong, not letting Tech stretch its lead to more than three points in the first 11 minutes of the game.

Tech then used hot shooting from Amanda Grappe to extend its lead to 33-18 at halftime. Tech used close to 70 percent shooting in the second half to increase its lead. Tech had its largest lead of 21 points twice, with the last time coming at the 8:23 mark in the second half, which was a lay-up from Grappe to set the score at 61-40 in favor of the Golden Suns.

Grappe led all scorers with 23 points and made a double-double out of her performance with 12 rebounds. Grappe was 6-of-13 from the field, 1-of-2 from three-point land, and a game-high 10-of-12 from the foul line.

“This was the Grappe show tonight,” said head women’s basketball coach Chris Ratcliff. “Tech has so many options, especially with transfer from the Razorbacks in Ruby Vaden, but it was all Grappe tonight. She really proved herself against us tonight.”

For the Blossoms, junior guard Andrea Dubose (Hickory, Miss.) led the team with 19 points. Dubose hit 6-of-10 field goals, and a game best 3-of-6 three pointers.

Sophomore LaToya Josey (Shreveport, La.) was the next high scorer for UAM, after turning in nine points.

The Blossoms turned in their second worst outing from the foul line in the loss after only making 14-of-23 free throws. The only worse performance was in the Southwest Baptist loss, when they shot 53 percent (9-17).

With the loss, UAM drops to 9-9 overall and 2-3 in GSC play, while the Suns extends its winning streak to 16 straight games, improving to 16-2 overall and a perfect 5-0 in conference action.

The Blossoms travel to Memphis on Thursday, Jan. 31 to play Christian Brothers in GSC action. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. in the Canale Arena on the CBU campus.

The game can be heard live on the radio on KHBM-FM 93.7, which will be streamed live on the UAM Athletic website at www.uamsports.com.
