Weevils Lose
To Mississippi Valley Despite Early Lead
February 26, 2008
MONTICELLO, Ark. –
Mississippi Valley State used an eight-run fourth inning to
create a lead too large for the University of Arkansas at
Monticello Boll Weevils to come back from, losing 13-11 and
remaining winless on the season.
The Weevils used three consecutive RBI singles in the bottom
of the third inning to take a quick 3-0 lead over the Delta
Devils.
Senior Chris Whatley (Sachse, Texas) started the
streak, smashing a single up the middle that scored freshman
T.J. Weed (Mangham, La.), who reached on a walk
earlier in the inning.
Sophomore Matt Gardner (West Monroe, La.) followed
with a single to left field that scored Whatley. Junior
Josh Wisnoski (Navasota, Texas) followed with a single
to right center field that score Gardner.
In the top of the seventh inning, the Weevils scored three
more runs, when Wisnoski doubled to right center field that
scored sophomore Craig Caldwell (West Monroe, La.),
who led the inning off with a single. Junior Ben Turner
(Greenville, Miss.) followed with a two-RBI double to
left center field that scored Wisnoski and Gardner, who
reached on a walk earlier in the inning.
Down by three in the bottom of the ninth inning, UAM only
answered with one run. After senior Ryan Pilcher
(West Monroe, La.) grounded out to the short stop to lead
off the inning, Weed singled to center field, then was moved
over with an bunt-hit from Caldwell. Whatley then hit a high
sacrifice fly to right field that scored Weed, who moved to
third one pitch earlier due to a wild pitch. Gardner
followed with a groundout to the short stop to end the game.
Sophomore Kevin Lienard (Drew, Miss.) recorded the
loss after relieving freshman starting pitcher Stuart
Morgan (Benton, Miss.) in the top of the fourth inning.
Lienard (0-1) allowed four runs (including the go-ahead runs
for the Devils) off two hits.
Wisnoski had one of the more productive games for the
Weevils, going 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBI. Caldwell
went 3-for-6 with one RBI, while freshman Josh Hathcox
(Bryan, Texas) and sophomore Lance Labeff (West
Monroe, La.) both went 2-for-4 at the plate.
With the loss, the Weevils drop to 0-12 overall this season,
while looking for their first win this weekend, when the
team travels to play a three-game series against Montevallo,
starting with a double-header on Saturday Mar. 1 at 2 p.m.,
followed by a single-nine inning game on Sunday.
