Weevils Swept

MONTEVALLO, Ala. –
The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball
team was swept in a three-game series with Montevallo this
weekend on the road with final scores of 26-1 in game one,
18-1 in game two, and 13-3 in the final game Sunday.
In the first game on Saturday, Montevallo used six
consecutive hits to gain a quick seven run lead after the
completion of the first inning.
The Weevils scored its lone run in the top of the ninth
inning when freshman Josh Hathcox (Bryan, Texas) hit
a sacrifice fly to center field that scored sophomore
Matt Gardner (West Monroe, La.), who doubled and moved
to third base on a wild pitch.
Sophomore Kyle Thaxton (Blytheville, Ark.) recorded
the loss for the Weevils after pitching four full innings,
allowing 15 runs (all earned) off 16 hits. Thaxton moves to
0-3 this season.
In the second game, the Falcons again scored early to gain a
large advantage, scoring three runs in the first inning,
followed by three in the second, and six in the third
inning.
The Weevils scored one run in the top of the third inning,
an unearned run, when sophomore Craig Caldwell (West
Monroe, La.) sacrificed sophomore Lance Labeff (West
Monroe, La.) across the plate with a fly-out to left field.
Labeff led off the inning with an infield single.
Hathcox made his second start of the season, but recorded
his second straight loss, allowing 12 runs (11 earned) off
13 hits in 2.1 innings of work.
In the final game of the series on Sunday, the Weevils again
allowed the Falcons to score early with one run in the first
inning, and five runs in the second inning.
The Weevils first reached the scoreboard in the top of the
fourth inning when Labeff scored on a wild pitch. Labeff led
the inning off with a double down the left field line and
moved to third on a passed ball.
The Weevils struck again in the top of the seventh inning,
when senior Chris Whatley (Sachse, Texas) smashed a
two-RBI single through the left side of the infield that
scored Thaxton and Caldwell, who both reached base with
singles to right field.
Sophomore David Nix (Camden, Ark.) recorded his fifth
straight loss after pitching 4.2 innings, allowing 12 runs
(seven earned) off 11 hits.
With the three losses, UAM drops to 0-15 overall this
season, and will look to record its first win this Tuesday,
Feb. 4, when the team travels for a non-conference
double-header at No. 10 West Alabama. The first-pitch is
scheduled for 1 p.m. from Livingston, Ala.
