MEMPHIS,
Tennessee –
The University of Arkansas at Monticello
baseball team dropped three games to
Christian Brothers in the first weekend of
Gulf South Conference action with final
scores of 15-6, 6-4, and 21-3.
CBU 15, UAM 6
The Weevils struck early with
two runs in the top of the first inning and
three runs in the top of the third, but
allowed the Buccaneers to score in all but
one inning of the game, including allowing
three runs in each of the fourth, fifth,
seventh, and eighth innings that was too
much to overcome, which ultimately led to
the loss.
The Weevils were only out hit
by two, as the Bucs collected their 15 runs
on 16 hits, while UAM scored six runs on 14
hits.
Junior Josh Wisnoski
(Navasota, Texas) had a productive game at
the plate, going two for four with two RBI.
Other Weevils that recorded two hits in the
game were sophomore Craig Caldwell
(West Monroe, La.), senior Chris Whatley
(Sachse, Texas), freshman Josh
Hathcox (Bryan, Texas), and sophomore
Lance Labeff (West Monroe, La.).
Hathcox recorded his third
loss of the season, after pitching the first
four innings allowing eight runs off seven
hits.
CBU 6, UAM 4
Despite out-hitting the Bucs
12-9, UAM dropped its second straight GSC
game of the season.
The Weevils scored one run in
each of the first, second, fourth, and
seventh innings, while CBU posted a
three-run third inning, a two-run fifth
inning, and a one-run eighth inning to gain
an advantage.
Junior Ben Turner
(Greenville, Miss.) had a game-high three
hits, while scoring twice and collecting one
RBI. All of the Weevil batters recorded at
least one hit in the loss, while Caldwell
trailed Turner with two hits.
Sophomore Kyle Thaxton
(Blytheville, Ark.) recorded his fourth loss
of the season in a complete game effort,
allowing six runs off nine hits in his eight
innings of work.
CBU 21, UAM 3
After the Weevils scored one
run in the top of the first inning, the Bucs
used a three-run homerun from their clean-up
batter Joseph Kaminski to give CBU a quick
edge.
The Bucs were not done
producing runs in the game, as the team used
an 11-run fourth inning to put the game out
of reach for the Weevils. In that inning,
eight of the nine Buc hitters had two
at-bats.
The Weevils’ run in the first
inning came from Caldwell, who doubled to
lead off the inning, then moved to third on
a groundout, and then scored on a wild
pitch.
The Weevils struck again in
the fourth inning, when Labeff hit an
RBI-single up the middle that scored
freshman Michael Diffie (El Dorado,
Ark.), who reached on a fielder’s choice
earlier in the inning.
The last Weevil run came in
the fifth inning, when Caldwell hit a
solo-shot over the center field fence, his
first home run of the season.
Whatley got the start and
recorded his third loss of the season after
allowing seven runs off seven hits in only
one inning of work.
