February 9, 2008

FLORENCE, Ala. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team committed eight errors in each of its losses to North Alabama on Saturday with final scores of 13-2 in the first game and 18-4 in the nightcap.

GAME ONE (L 13-2)
The Weevils allowed North Alabama to score two or more runs in each of the first three innings, allowing the Lions to gain a quick seven run lead.

The first Weevil run came in the top of the fifth inning, when UAM hit back-to-back doubles. The first double came from the bat of senior Chris Whatley (Sachse, Texas). Following Whatley was an RBI-double from freshman Josh Hathcox (Bryan, Texas) that scored junior Josh Wisnoski (Navasota, Texas), who reached on a base on balls.

Freshman Ben Miller (El Dorado, Ark.) led off the top of the sixth inning with a single, then was scored by an RBI-double from the bat of Weevil teammate Ben Turner (Greenville, Miss.).

Recording the loss for the Weevils was sophomore starter David Nix (Camden, Ark.), who pitched five full innings before giving way to relief. Nix allowed seven runs (five earned) off five hits, while striking out three of the 26 batters he faced.

GAME TWO (L 18-4)
Sophomore Craig Caldwell (West Monroe, La.) led the Weevils, going 2-for-3 at the plate, but the team was out-hit 15-7 on its way to recording its fifth loss.

Caldwell led off the top of the fourth inning with a double and was later scored on an RBI-single off the bat of sophomore Matt Gardner (West Monroe, La.) that opened the scoring for the Weevils in the game.

UAM’s first homerun of the season came in the top of the fifth inning when senior Ryan Pilcher (West Monroe, La.) sent three-run shot over the left field fence that scored Hathcox, Whatley, and Caldwell.

Getting the loss for the Weevils was sophomore Kyle Thaxton (Blytheville, Ark.). Thaxton (0-1) pitched only the first inning, which was enough for head coach Ron Hill. Thaxton allowed 12 runs (two earned) off eight hits, while walking two batters and striking out one of the 16 batters he faced.
