Weevils Swept By #22 Ouachita Baptist on the Road
April 6, 2008

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team dropped all three games of a Gulf South Conference series with No. 22 Ouachita Baptist with final scores of 13-3, 11-7 and 18-3.

In the first game, the Weevils scored all of their runs in the sixth inning, including a two-RBI double from sophomore Craig Caldwell (West Monroe, La.) and an RBI-groundout by sophomore Matt Gardner (West Monroe, La.).

Freshman Ryan Rawls (Bastrop, La.) recorded his first loss of the season, after pitching just one third of an inning, allowing four runs off five hits.

In the second game, the Weevils crossed the plate seven times - the highest run total since March 4 in a 9-8 loss to West Alabama.

Junior Ben Turner (Greenville, Miss.) started the scoring with a two-run homerun to left field, marking his first blast of the season.

Then in the fifth inning, the Weevils scored four runs off five hits, including a two-RBI single from freshman Josh Hathcox (Bryan, Texas) that scored Turner and Caldwell, who singled and walked earlier in the inning.

Down 11-6 going into the seventh inning, Turner improved his productive day at the dish with an RBI-double that scored Caldwell, who reached on a walk one batter earlier. That double ended the scoring. Turner finished the game with a 2 for 3 day, including three RBI and two runs scored.

Sophomore Kyle Thaxton (Blytheville, Ark.) recorded his seventh loss of the season after pitching five and one third innings, allowing 10 runs off nine hits.

In the final game of the series, the Weevils scored two runs in the top of the second inning that tied the game at 2-all, but the Tigers proceeded to go on a 16-1 streak over the next five innings, forcing the game to be called at the end of the seventh inning due to the NCAA’s 10-run rule.

Gardner led the Weevils with a 2 for 2 performance at the dish with one RBI and one run scored.

Sophomore starting pitcher David Nix (Camden, Ark.) recorded his sixth loss of the season after pitching four and one third innings, allowing nine runs off seven hits.

UAM drops to 0-29 overall and 0-11 in the GSC, while OBU improves to 35-7 and 7-4. The Weevils look to get their first win of the season Saturday, April 12, when the team hosts Delta State for a three-game GSC series. The first game on Saturday starts at 1 p.m. Delta State is currently ranked No. 11 in the nation and is fresh off a three-game home sweep of Henderson State.
