Weevils Drop Both Games at Arkansas Tech
February 19, 2008

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – The hot-hitting Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys took both ends of a non-conference double-header from the University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils Tuesday with final scores of 8-0 in the first game and 3-1 in the nightcap.

Arkansas Tech’s Jantzen Black and Tony Sanchez have entered the Gulf South Conference record book as both have hit safely in 11 straight at-bats this season. Black went 4-for-4 at the plate against UAM in the first game to reach the mark, with his streak ending in his first at-bat of the second game, when he grounded out to third base.

Tech held UAM to only three hits in the first game. Sophomore Craig Caldwell (West Monroe, La.) and junior Josh Wisnoski (Navasota, Texas) both went 1-for-3 at the plate, while senior Ryan Pilcher (West Monroe, La.) was the other Weevil to get a hit, going 1-for-2 at the plate.

Recording the loss for the Weevils after pitching the first four innings was sophomore Kyle Thaxton (Blytheville, Ark.). Thaxton allowed seven runs (all earned) off 11 hits. Tech’s Caleb Powers was given the win, marking his first collegiate win.

In the nightcap, UAM wasted no time reaching the scoreboard. Sophomore Matt Gardner (El Dorado, Ark.) smashed an RBI-double to right field that scored freshman Ben Miller (El Dorado, Ark.) who reached on a walk one at-bat earlier.

Tech then shut out the Weevils, scoring one run in the bottom of the third inning and two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Caldwell led the Weevils, going 2-for-4 at the plate. Sophomore David Nix (Camden, Ark.) was given the loss after pitching 3.2 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) off six hits, dropping to 0-3 on the season. Tech’s Cody Taylor was given the win, improving his season record to 2-1.

With the losses, UAM drops to 0-8 overall this season and looks to get their first win in the team’s home opener this weekend (Feb. 23-24), when Northwest Missouri State travels to Monticello for a three-game series, starting with a single nine-inning game on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Weevil Field.
