February 3, 2008
EDMOND, Oklahoma –
The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team
dropped the final game of a three-game series against
Central Oklahoma on Sunday with a final score of 18-4.
Central Oklahoma, who was picked to finish third place in
the Lone-Star Conference in the preseason poll, won all
three game of the series against the Weevils.
Sunday’s game, which was scheduled for nine innings, only
lasted seven, due to the NCAA’s 10-run rule, which takes
place at the end of the seventh inning when either team is
ahead by 10 runs or more.
Stuart Morgan (Benton, Miss.) was credited with the
loss for the Weevils. Morgan relieved starter Ross Jacobs
(Monticello, Ark.) after the first inning. Morgan
allowed five runs to score, all earned, in his two innings
on the mound.
Offensively for the Weevils, catcher Josh Wisnoski
(Navasota, Texas) led the way after going 3-for-4 at the
plate.
UAM jumped on the scoreboard first in the top of the second
inning with three players crossing the plate. Allan Neill
(Magnolia, Ark.) singled up the middle to score both
Wisnoski and Chris Whatley (Sachse, Texas), who both
reached base on back-to-back singles. Neill was later scored
from an RBI single off the bat of Ben Miller (El
Dorado, Ark.).
UCO answered the Weevils with three runs of its own to tie
the game at 3-3 at the end of the second inning.
UAM struck again in the top of the third inning for the
final time when Wisnoski singled to right field, advanced to
second base on a balk, then was driven home by an RBI single
from the bat of Whatley.
UCO’s Joe Noyes was credited with the win, his first of the
season, after throwing 4.1 innings, allowing four runs (all
earned) off eight hits, and striking out six of the 22
batters he faced.
After the weekend series, UAM now has an 0-3 overall record,
and will look for its first win this weekend when the team
travels to Florence, Ala. for a three-game series against
North Alabama starting with a double-header on Saturday,
Feb. 9. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. The third
game of the series will be played Sunday, also starting at 1
p.m.
