The
University
of Arkansas
at
Monticello
baseball
team stepped
out of
conference
action on
Wednesday to
defeat
Alabama A&M
8-2,
followed by
a 6-5 loss
to
Alabama-Huntsville
later in the
day.
The split
moves UAM to
8-36-1
overall,
while
Alabama A&M
drops to
12-23 and
Alabama-Huntsville
improves to
27-10.
In the win
over A&M,
junior Tyler
Henry (1-5)
led the
Weevils both
offensively
and on the
mound, going
3-for-4 at
the plate
with two RBI
and one run
scored. On
the mound,
he threw the
first five
innings,
allowed one
run off five
hits, struck
out two and
did not
allow a
single walk
to any of
the 17
batters he
faced.
Freshman
Craig
Pellegrin
recorded his
first save
of the
season after
tossing the
final four
innings in
relief of
Henry,
allowing one
run off four
hits with a
pair of
walks and
four
strikeouts.
Juniors
Richard
Atwood and
Brian
Johnson also
recorded two
RBI in the
contest.
Atwood went
3-for-5 with
two RBI and
a run
scored,
while
Johnson went
2-for-4 with
two RBI and
two runs
scored.
Johnson’s
big blow
came in the
top of the
third inning
with a
two-run
homerun to
right center
field, while
Atwood
recorded a
two-RBI
double in
the eighth.
A&M’s Jeremy
Flores (1-2)
was saddled
with the
loss,
allowing
three runs
off four
hits with no
walks and no
strikeouts
in his two
and one
third
innings of
work.
In the loss
to
Alabama-Huntsville,
UAM scored
four runs in
the top of
the ninth
inning to
take a 5-4
lead over
the
Chargers,
but a
walk-off
two-run
homerun by
Jordan
Parker in
the bottom
half of the
frame was
the deciding
factor.
In the
ninth, UAM
used three
run-producing
at bats to
push across
four runs,
started by
Henry’s RBI
single
through the
right side
of the
infield,
followed by
an RBI
single to
center by
Atwood.
Later in the
inning,
junior
Matthew
Gardner
delivered
the big blow
with a
two-RBI
single to
right
center.
Henry kept
his
impressive
day alive by
smashing an
RBI double
in the
fourth to
get things
started for
UAM. He
finished the
game 4-for-4
at the plate
with two RBI
and one run
scored.
Atwood (0-4)
could not
deliver the
save,
allowing two
runs off two
hits in his
two thirds
of an
inning.
UAH’s Chase
Earl (9-2)
earned the
win after
allowing
only one hit
in his one
inning of
work.
UAM finishes
the 2009
season this
weekend with
a three-game
home series
with
Henderson
State,
started with
a noon
double
header on
Saturday,
April 25 at
Weevils
Field in
Monticello.
