Contact: Brian Ramsey, UAM Sports Information

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team stepped out of conference action on Wednesday to defeat Alabama A&M 8-2, followed by a 6-5 loss to Alabama-Huntsville later in the day.

The split moves UAM to 8-36-1 overall, while Alabama A&M drops to 12-23 and Alabama-Huntsville improves to 27-10.

In the win over A&M, junior Tyler Henry (1-5) led the Weevils both offensively and on the mound, going 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and one run scored. On the mound, he threw the first five innings, allowed one run off five hits, struck out two and did not allow a single walk to any of the 17 batters he faced.

Freshman Craig Pellegrin recorded his first save of the season after tossing the final four innings in relief of Henry, allowing one run off four hits with a pair of walks and four strikeouts.

Juniors Richard Atwood and Brian Johnson also recorded two RBI in the contest. Atwood went 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored, while Johnson went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Johnson’s big blow came in the top of the third inning with a two-run homerun to right center field, while Atwood recorded a two-RBI double in the eighth.

A&M’s Jeremy Flores (1-2) was saddled with the loss, allowing three runs off four hits with no walks and no strikeouts in his two and one third innings of work.

In the loss to Alabama-Huntsville, UAM scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning to take a 5-4 lead over the Chargers, but a walk-off two-run homerun by Jordan Parker in the bottom half of the frame was the deciding factor.

In the ninth, UAM used three run-producing at bats to push across four runs, started by Henry’s RBI single through the right side of the infield, followed by an RBI single to center by Atwood. Later in the inning, junior Matthew Gardner delivered the big blow with a two-RBI single to right center.

Henry kept his impressive day alive by smashing an RBI double in the fourth to get things started for UAM. He finished the game 4-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and one run scored.

Atwood (0-4) could not deliver the save, allowing two runs off two hits in his two thirds of an inning. UAH’s Chase Earl (9-2) earned the win after allowing only one hit in his one inning of work.

UAM finishes the 2009 season this weekend with a three-game home series with Henderson State, started with a noon double header on Saturday, April 25 at Weevils Field in Monticello.
