of Arkansas
at
Monticello
baseball
team
suffered
three losses
to the 20th
ranked Delta
State
Statesmen by
scores of
12-10, 10-1
and 5-3.
In Friday’s
first game
of the
series, UAM
used a
six-run
fourth
inning and a
four-run
sixth inning
to tie the
game at
10-all. In
the fourth,
junior
Matthew
Lewis hit a
two-RBI
single to
right
center,
followed
later by a
two-RBI
triple from
junior
Blaine Ivey.
Juniors
Tyler Henry
and Richard
Atwood also
had
run-producing
at bats in
the frame.
In the sixth
inning, the
Weevils used
four
consecutive
run-producing
at bats,
including
three
consecutive
RBI doubles.
Junior Brian
Johnson
started the
rally,
followed by
Ivey and
Henry.
Junior Matt
Gardner
ended the
stretch with
an RBI
sacrifice
fly-out to
right field.
Delta
State’s
Kellen
Bozeman
smashed a
solo homerun
to left
center in
the bottom
half of the
sixth to
give the
Statesmen
back a
one-run
edge. DSU
finalized
the game’s
scoring in
the bottom
of the
eighth with
one unearned
run.
Junior Casey
Cathcart
(1-2) took
the loss
after
allowing
Bozeman’s
homerun. He
also allowed
one other
run off four
hits. DSU’s
Hunter
Wilson (1-0)
earned the
win, while
teammate
Lance Bishop
picked up
his fourth
save of the
season.
In the first
game on
Saturday,
UAM scored
its lone run
in the top
of the
second
inning with
an RBI walk
by junior
Rod
Williams,
scoring
junior Drew
Harper, who
singled to
left earlier
in the
inning.
Ivey (0-1)
took the
loss after a
rough start,
giving up
four runs
off no hits
and walking
five batters
in only a
third of an
inning.
DSU’s Tyler
Griffin
(5-0) earned
the win
after going
seven
innings,
allowing one
run off six
hits.
In
Saturday’s
second game,
DSU’s
four-run
fourth
inning
proved to be
enough for
the win. UAM
threatened
in the
seventh and
final inning
with a pair
of runs,
thanks to
back-to-back
RBI singles
by Johnson
and Ivey.
UAM’s other
run in the
contest came
from junior
Ariel
Mercedes’
first
homerun of
the season,
a solo shot
to
left-center
in the top
of the third
inning.
Henry (0-4)
was saddled
with the
loss after
allowing the
final four
runs off
five hits in
three and
one third
innings of
work. DSU’s
John Haston
(5-2) was
credited
with the win
after
allowing
three runs
off seven
hits and
striking out
10 batters
in his six
and two
thirds
innings of
work.
The Weevils
step out of
divisional
play for a
double-header
at West
Alabama on
Tuesday,
April 14,
scheduled to
start at
1:30 p.m. in
Livingston,
Ala. UAM
stays on the
road for a
GSC-West
series at
Harding on
Saturday and
Sunday in
Searcy, Ark.
