MONTICELLO –
No. 5
Southern
Arkansas’
Hayden
Simpson
struck out
10 batters
in route to
a
complete-game
10-0 win
over the
University
of Arkansas
at
Monticello
baseball
team on
Saturday in
Gulf South
Conference
play.
The Weevils
(6-23-1, 0-4
GSC) could
only muster
one trip
into scoring
position
against the
SAU (26-7,
6-1 GSC)
sophomore
hurler, when
junior Brian
Johnson
tripled off
the
right-center
field wall
in the
bottom of
the fourth
inning.
Johnson
finished the
game 2-for-3
at the plate
after
beating out
a grounder
to the first
baseman in
the bottom
of the
seventh
inning.
Simpson
(6-1)
allowed only
three hits
in the game,
while also
allowing no
walks in his
seven
innings of
work, aiding
to a
run-rule
victory for
the
Muleriders.
Junior Tyler
Henry (0-3)
was saddled
with the
loss after
pitching the
first four
innings,
allowing
seven runs
on seven
hits,
walking five
and striking
out five of
the 26
batters he
faced.
Junior
Brandon
Miller
relieved
Henry in the
fifth and
allowed
three runs
on five
hits.
SAU jumped
on the
scoreboard
early with a
three-run
homerun in
the top of
the first
inning by
Cannon
Lester.
Henry
allowed one
un-earned
run in the
second, but
held the
Muleriders
scoreless
over the
next two
frames.
However, SAU
put a
four-spot on
the
scoreboard
in the
fifth,
forcing
Henry out of
the game.
The two
squads were
scheduled to
play a
double-header
Saturday,
but Friday
night’s
excessive
rain pushed
Saturday’s
start time
to 2 p.m.,
forcing the
double-header
portion of
the series
to Sunday
starting at
12 p.m. at
Weevils
Field.
