Sturdivant Hits A Three With 4 Second Remaining To Lift Weevils Over Wonder Boys
January 26, 2008

RUSSELLVILLE, Arkansas – Junior guard Duke Sturdivant nailed a three-pointer with four seconds remaining in the game to give the University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils a 67-64 win over Arkansas Tech, marking the third straight win for the Weevils.

Sturdivant (York, Ala.), who had spent 14 minutes on the bench after committing a game-high six turnovers, connected on 5-of-8 field goals, including his game-winning three-pointer.

Sturdivant’s shot was forced due to Tech coming back to tie the game at 64-all after trailing by 16 with 3:11 left in the contest. Tech’s Chad Henderson scored 16 points, all in the second half, 13 during the last three minutes of the contest. During that comeback, the Weevils committed four turnovers in three minutes.

“We played real well until the last few minutes,” said head men’s basketball coach Mike Newell. “We had a double-digit lead with around three minutes left, and it was like we took a stupid pill...We let (Tech) get back into a game that we had won…The best team won tonight, but the best team didn’t deserve to win after that poor performance so late in the game.”

Sturdivant was one of the five Boll Weevils that finished the contest with 10 or more points.

Junior Bernard Seymour (Biloxi, Miss.) led the Weevils with 15 points, after hitting 7-of-10 field goals.

Freshman D’Angelo Dean (Cincinnati, Ohio) and junior Deron Brown (Paris, Ky.) each finished with 12 points. Dean also had eight rebounds, five of which were offensive, aiding him to half of his point total.

Rounding out the double-digit scorers for the Weevils was junior Raymond Wright (New York, N.Y.) who finished the contest with 10 points. Wright recorded his eighth double-double in only 12 games played this season after pulling down 10 boards. Wright contributed to the Weevil’s 75 percent free throw shooting after connecting on all of his four free throw attempts.

With the win, the Weevils have now won three straight games, all in Gulf South Conference action – improving to 11-6 overall and 3-2 in conference action. The loss snaps a four-game winning streak for the Wonder Boys and drops them to 13-5 overall and 4-1 in conference play.

The Weevils now travel to Memphis on Thursday, Jan. 31 to play Christian Brothers in GSC play. Tip-off is scheduled 7 p.m. in the Canale Arena.

The game can be heard live on the radio at KHBM-FM 93.7, which will be streamed live on the UAM Athletic website, www.uamsports.com
