Weevils Can't Comeback From Poor First Half Shooting In Loss to Christian Brothers at Home

MONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas at Monticello men’s basketball team shot 20 percent from the field in the first half, aiding to a 59-55 loss to Christian Brothers Thursday night at home, marking the second home loss of the season for the Weevils.

 

The Weevils improved their shooting in the second half to pull the game to within eight points just four minutes into the second half. Christian Brothers’ Kevin Weybright followed by scoring five points in less than a minute to extend the CBU lead back above 10.

 

Freshman D’Angelo Dean (Cincinnati, Ohio) hit two free throws with 2:03 remaining in regulation to pull the Weevils to within one point at 52-53. A jumper fro CBU’s Nick Kohs put the Bucs back up by three. With 49 seconds left, sophomore Derek Easter (El Dorado, Ark.) connected on a tip-in off an inbounds pass to pull the Weevils to within one point again.

 

The Weevils, then forced to foul, only answered CBU’s free throws with one field goal, which sealed a win for CBU, keeping them alive for a share of the Gulf South Conference West Division championship.

 

The Weevils were led by junior Duke Sturdivant (York, Ala.) who scored 13 points. He Dean followed with 12 points, while Easter and junior Deron Brown (Paris, Ky.) both reached double-digits with 11 points each.

 

With the loss, the Weevils drop to 15-11 overall and 7-6 in the GSC, while the Bucs improve to 18-9 overall and 9-4 in the GSC.

 

The next action for the Weevils is this Saturday, Mar. 1, when the team travels to UAM for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off against Southern Arkansas. The game can be heard live on the radio at KHBM-FM 93.7, which will be streamed live through UAM’s athletic website by logging on to uamsports.com.
