Tech held a nine-point lead with
14:24 left in the game, when the Weevils used a 10-1
run to pull the game to its seventh tie at 43-all.
Tech jumped back to a five-point lead with five
minutes to go, but UAM used a 9-2 run to gain a
one-point lead. Tech’s Darren Tarver tried to win it
for the Wonder Boys, but UAM freshman D’Angelo
Dean (Cincinnati, Ohio) blocked the ball out of
bounds at the end of regulation to seal the win.
UAM was led by junior Raymond
Wright (New York, N.Y.), who recorded his tenth
double-double of the season with 15 points and 11
rebounds. Freshman Justin Johnson (Amarillo,
Texas) scored 10 points in the win, while both
Sturdivant (York, Ala.) and Dean scored nine
points. Dean tied his season high with 12 boards.
Both teams shot equally well from the
field. UAM held the slight advantage, 35.7 percent
to Tech’s 35.4 percent.
Tech was led by Darren Tarver, who
scored 14 points. Tarver saw 25 minutes of play in
the loss after missing five straight games due to a
knee injury. Jamar Flowers trailed close with 12
points.
The win improves the Weevils to 15-10
overall and 7-5 in the GSC, while the Wonder Boys
drop to 16-9 and 7-5 in the GSC.
The next action for UAM is Thursday,
Feb. 28, when the team hosts Christian Brothers for
a 7:30 p.m. tip-off from the Steelman Fieldhouse.
