CLEVELAND, Miss. –
The University
of Arkansas at Monticello men’s basketball team dropped a
Gulf South Conference road game Saturday night to Delta
State with a final score of 63-60.
DSU’s Earnesto Green scored
all of his 11 points in the second half, and nailed a
three-pointer with 28 seconds remaining in the game to give
the Statesmen a 63-60 advantage.
After a timeout called by
UAM head coach Mike Newell, UAM had two chances to
tie the game, but a missed three-point shot from both junior
Deron Brown (Paris, Ky.) and freshman D’Angelo
Dean (Cincinnati, Ohio) sent the Weevils home with a
loss.
Dean led the way
offensively for the Weevils after finishing with 17 points,
while also pulling down eight rebounds. Junior Raymond
Wright (New York, N.Y.) scored eight second half points
to finish with 11 points, while also pulling down eight
boards.
For the Statesmen, Jordan
Clements scored a game-high 19 points, while Green finished
with 11, followed by Justin Duke, who rounded out the DSU
double-digit scorers with 10 points.
The Weevils shot poorly
from the foul line for the second straight game. In the
first half, UAM shot just over 40 percent, but pulled that
number up in the second half with 66 percent foul shooting
to give the team a final 50 percent from the foul line.
Junior Giovanni
Marchetti started in the game for just the fourth time
this season. Marchetti made his performance memorable after
recording 11 points. Two of his field goals came from behind
the three-point line.
With the loss, UAM drops to
13-10 overall this season and 5-5 in GSC play, while the
Statesmen improve to 12-10 and 6-4 in conference games.
The next action for the
Weevils is Thursday, Feb. 21, when UAM travels to
Arkadelphia to face Henderson State in a GSC road game.
