Weevils Get GSC Win No. 1 With 78-73 Win Over Statesmen
January 19, 2008

MONTICELLO, Arkansas – The University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils won its first Gulf South Conference game of the season with a come-from-behind 78-73 win over Delta State Saturday afternoon.

Junior Raymond Wright (New York, N.Y.) led the game in both points and rebounds with final total of 24 points and 13 rebounds. The double-double performance increases his season total to seven double-doubles in only 11 games played.

Wright received significant help from junior Bernard Seymour (Biloxi, Miss.), after the 6-4 guard turned in an 18-point performance, while hitting 6-of-7 field goal attempts, hitting one three-pointer, and sinking 5-of-7 foul shots – all of the bench. The game total was Seymour’s second highest total of this season, while the five foul shots made was his season high for a single game.

Other Weevils finishing in double-digits was junior Duke Sturdivant (York, Ala.) and freshman D’Angelo Dean (Cincinnati, Ohio), who finished with 14 and 11 points, respectively.

The Weevils, as a team, finished 28-of-60 from the field, while the Statesmen combined for a 26-of-52 performance.

Wright and Seymour aided UAM to a 72 percent free-throw percentage for the game, after the two combined for 11 free-throws made, which was over 70 percent of the team’s points from the foul line.

Delta had its largest lead of six points at the 3:22 mark in the first half, thanks to three-pointer made by DSU’s Eric Spencer, while UAM had its largest lead at the 8:26 mark in the second half, when Seymour made two of his five free-throws.

UAM improves to 9-6 overall and 1-2 in Gulf South Conference play, while Delta State drops to a 7-8 overall and 1-2 in GSC play.

The Weevils host Henderson State on Thursday, Jan. 26 in the Steelman Fieldhouse for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off immediately following the women’s contest. The game can be heard live on the radio at KHBM-FM 93.7, which will be streamed live on the UAM Athletics website at www.uamsports.com.
