Weevils Knock Off Henderson State For A GSC Road Win
February 21, 2008

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello men’s basketball team won a must-win game against Henderson State with a final score of 77-56 to remain alive in the contention for a bid into the Gulf South Conference Tournament.

Junior guard Deron Brown (Paris, Ky.) led the team with 19 points, while freshman D’Angelo Dean (Cincinnati, Ohio) followed with 17 points, with junior Duke Sturdivant (York, Ala.) being the other Weevil to reach double-digits with 16 points.

Freshman Justin Johnson (Amarillo, Texas) got the start for the Weevils and made significant contributions early, making two three-pointers in the first five minutes of the game. Johnson finished the game with nine points.

UAM had struggled from the foul line in the OBU and DSU games, but tonight rebounded to shoot 78 percent from the charity stripe in the game. Brown was a perfect 4-of-4 from the foul line, while Dean contributed to that high percentage, sinking 5-of-8 foul shots. Three other Weevils went 2-for-2 from the line.

Henderson State led the Weevils late in the second half with 5:36 left, but UAM used 44 percent field goal shooting to gain a comfortable lead on their way to the team’s fourth road win of the season.

UAM improves to 14-10 overall and 6-5 in the GSC, while the Reddies drop to 3-21 overall and remain winless in the GSC with a 0-11 mark.

The next action for the Weevils is Saturday, Feb. 23 when the team hosts Arkansas Tech for a 4 p.m. tip-off from the Steelman Fieldhouse. The game can be heard live on the radio at KHBM-FM 93.7, which will be streamed through UAM’s athletic website by logging on to uamsports.com.
