MEMPHIS,
Tennessee – The University of Arkansas at
Monticello Boll Weevils shot above 60 percent from the field
in the first half, taking a seven point lead over Christian
Brothers into the locker room at halftime, but shot only 20
percent from the field in the second half – leading to a
54-66 loss, snapping a three-game win streak for the
Weevils.
Gulf South Conference leading rebounder
Raymond Wright (New York, N.Y.) did not pull down a
rebound until around six minutes left in the second half.
Wright was a perfect 5-of-5 from the field in the first
half, but failed to connect on a field goal in the second
half, finishing with 12 points.
Leading the way for the Weevils was junior
Deron Brown (Paris, Ky.), who finished the contest with
15 points. Brown was also perfect in the first half after
hitting all three of his field goal attempts – all of which
were from three-point range. Brown only made two field goals
in the second half, finishing 5-of-11.
Junior Duke Sturdivant (York, Ala.)
had a strong first half as well, but like most of his
teammates in the second half, shot poorly in the second
half. Sturdivant finished the contest with nine points.
The Weevil’s led all the way up to the 11:51
mark in the second half, but failed to reach the scoreboard
again until the 6:52 mark, with a free throw from Wright.
Leading the way for the Buccaneers was Justin
Ray, who tied with Brown for the game high in three-pointers
with five made. All of Ray’s field goals were from
three-point range. Also reaching double digits for the Bucs
was Nick Kohs with 15 points and Kevin Weybright with 14
points.
With the loss, UAM drops to 11-7 overall and
falls back to an even 3-3 in GSC action, while CBU improves
to 11-8 and also 3-3 in GSC play.
The Weevils host Southern Arkansas on
Saturday, Feb. 2 in the Steelman Fieldhouse in the last game
of the first round of GSC games. Tip-off is scheduled for 4
p.m.
