March 25, 2008
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team split a Gulf South Conference double header with Christian Brothers on Monday by losing the first game 1-0 and posting a 5-3 victory in the second game.

In the win, UAM reached the scoreboard first with a sacrifice fly from junior Lindsay Randall (Keithville, La.) in the top of the first inning that scored senior lead off batter Meredith Heckel (Hot Springs, Ark.), who led off the inning with an infield single.

In the top of the fourth, junior Heather Greer (Hollandale, Miss.) drove in two runs with a double down the left field line that gave UAM a 3-0 lead, scoring sophomore Kayla Temple (West Monroe, La.) and senior Lauren Brooks (West Monroe, La.), who both reached on singles to left field.

Randall proved to be the player of the game in the top of the fifth when she blasted a two-run shot over the center field fence to give her three RBI in the game. Sophomore Becca Tipton (Dermott, Ark.), who doubled to center one batter earlier, scored on the home run.

Senior hurler Kate Brady (Longview, Texas) improved her record to 5-5 after getting a complete game win only allowing three runs off six hits and walking none of the 27 batters she faced.

In the first game, CBU’s Nikki Dunn was too much to handle for the Blossoms. Dunn struck out nine batters on her way to recording her eighth win of the season.

Senior Jenny Dunn (Adelaide, Australia) was a perfect 3 for 3 from the plate, while senior teammate Gemma Gibson (Dodd City, Texas) trailed closely after going 2 for 4.

Junior Becca Sustaire (Hallsville, Texas) recorded the loss, moving to 5-8 on the season. Sustaire only allowed one run off five hits, while striking out five of the 22 CBU batters she faced.

With the split, UAM now stands at 10-16 overall and 4-2 in the GSC, while CBU moves to 12-12 overall and 1-7 in the GSC.
