Strong Second Half Pushes Statesmen Past Weevils
November 5, 2005

MONTICELLO, AR --- The Delta State University Statesmen broke open a 20-13 halftime lead with 36 unanswered second-half points to take a 56-13 victory over the University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils (1-10, 1-8 GSC) on Military Appreciation Night at Convoy Leslie-Cotton Boll Stadium.

After the Weevils went three and out on the opening drive, senior Sam Wisener stripped the ball from Radale Pearson and recovered at the UAM 40 yard line. The Weevils marched into Statesmen territory but were unable to get past Delta State’s 41, and punted away.

Pearson redeemed himself on DSU’s next drive by capping off a seven play, 96 yard drive with a 40 yard touchdown run to give the Statesmen an early 7-0 lead. The Statesmen extended their lead to 14-0 on their very next drive as Scott Eyster connected with Mike Wallace on a 66 yard touchdown strike to finish a four play, 61 yard drive.

The Boll Weevils responded on their next drive, as John L. Williams picked up a two-yard touchdown run to cap a nine play, 59 yard drive. After a personal foul penalty, Albert Urbina missed the extra point and the Weevil deficit was 14-6.

The Statesmen opened the second quarter with another scoring drive, marching 50 yards downfield on nine plays, finished off by a 27-yard field goal by Bryan Walker to push DSU’s lead to 17-6. The Weevils answered immediately, as Williams capped a nine play, 61 yard drive with a 23 yard touchdown run to pull the Weevils to within 17-13.

DSU pushed their lead to 20-13 on the very next drive, as Walker kicked his second field goal of the day from 26 yards, and the Statesmen would carry that lead into halftime.

Unfortunately for the Weevils, the second half belonged to the Statesmen, who reeled off 36 unanswered points to seal the victory.

DSU scored early and often in the third quarter, scoring first on the opening drive with a 17-yard touchdown strike from Eyster to Chad Ridley to push the lead to 27-13. After stopping the Weevils on fourth down, the Statesmen surged ahead again as Eyster connected with Ridley on a 35-yard strike to give Delta State a 34-13 lead.

A.J. Davis picked up a three yard touchdown run with nine seconds remaining in the third quarter to extend the Delta State lead to 41-13.

The Statesmen forced a turnover on UAM’s first drive of the fourth quarter and were able to capitalize on both the turnover and a costly holding penalty to push ahead 49-15 after a one yard run by Steven Davis. DSU scored their final touchdown on their next drive, as Jazmond Burks found the end zone after a five yard run to set the DSU lead at 56-13.

Williams eclipsed the 1,000 rushing yard barrier in the first half, ending the day with 23 carried for 116 yards and two scores. Anthony Rodriguez had his best passing game of the season, going 16 of 33 for 212 yards. Von Mixon added seven catches for 80 yards.

DSU’s Eyster was an amazing 22-of-30 for 325 yards and three touchdowns, while Pearson picked up 180 yards on 21 carries. Ridley had seven catches for 115 yards and two touchdowns, while Robert Davis had nine catches for 95 yards.

The loss ends the season for the Boll Weevils, who finish with a record of 1-10 and a 1-8 Gulf South Conference mark.

Central Arkansas Downs Weevils
October 29, 2005

CONWAY, AR --- The University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils (1-9, 1-7 GSC) were unable to overcome a nearly perfect offensive day by the #22 University of Central Arkansas Bears, falling 56-7 tonight at Estes Stadium.

The Bears scored early and often in the first quarter, opening scoring on their first drive with a 22-yard touchdown run by Kentrel Rogers to cap a three play, 51-yard drive and give UCA a 7-0 lead just over three minutes into the game.

UAM’s offense was unable to respond, and the Weevils went three-and-out. UCA scored again on their next drive, as Rogers capped another three-play drive with an 18-yard run to push the Bear lead to 14-0 just over six minutes in.

After another UAM three-and-out, the Bears tacked on another score on the first play of the ensuing drive, as Nathan Brown connected with Aaron Fairooz with a 72-yard touchdown pass to extend the Bear lead to 21-0.

The Weevil offense finally managed to get going on their next drive, as Anthony Rodriguez connected with Jamie Dunn on a 33-yard pass taking the Weevils from their own eight yard line to the 48 yard line.

The Weevils managed another first down, but after a holding penalty the Weevils were forced into a first-and-20 and were unable to convert.

On their next drive, Ross Brown struck paydirt on the end of a two-yard run to cap a nine play, 80-yard drive and push the UCA lead to 28-0.

The Bears ended the first quarter up 28-0, and continued the offensive onslaught in the second quarter, extending their lead to 35-0 on 23-yard touchdown pass from Brown to Austin Cade, capping a four play, 48-yard drive.

The Weevils were forced to punt again after a three-and-out, and UCA marched downfield again, capping a six play, 52-yard drive with a 19-yard touchdown pass from Chris Reil to Fairooz to extend the Bear lead to 42-0.

UCA carried their 42-0 lead into the half having outgained the Weevils 333 yards to 86.

The Bears scored on their first drive of the third quarter after using 8:09 and 13 plays to drive 66 yards downfield, scoring on a three yard pass from Brown to Joseph Walker, extending their lead to 49-0.

The two teams traded punts as time wound down in the third quarter, and the Bears went into the fourth with the 49-0 lead.

The Weevils avoided being shutout early in the fourth quarter, finishing a seven play, 88-yard drive when Anthony Rodriguez connected with Robert Jackson with an eight yard strike, narrowing the Bear lead to 49-7.

The Bears would march downfield once more, scoring on a six yard run by Ross Brown to extend their lead to 56-7.

The Bears outgained UAM 507 yards to 249 for the game, racking up 342 passing yards and 165 rushing yards.

UCA quarterbacks Chris Reil and Nathan Brown were nearly perfect, as Brown completed 10-of-12 passes for 185 yards and three touchdowns and Reil connected on 8-of-10 passes for 157 yards and one touchdown.

Rodriguez completed 11-of-23 passes for 148 yards and one touchdown, while Von Mixon hauled in five passes for 81 yards. John L. Williams led the Weevils on the ground with 83 yards on 20 carries.

The Weevils were led defensively by Solomon Edwards, who posted 14 tackles behind 11 solo stops. DeMathus Ledet added an interception, and Corrie Ross recovered a fumble.

The Weevils return to action on Saturday, November 5, hosting Delta State University in the final game of the 2005 season and “Military Appreciation Day.” Kickoff is set for 6 p.m., with tailgating beginning at 3 p.m. and the Walk of Champions set for 4 p.m.

Weevils Head To Central Arkansas For Final Road Game
October 27, 2005

CONWAY, AR --- As the 2005 season comes to a close, the University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils take their final road trip of the season to Conway searching for their second win of the season and their third consecutive win over the #22 University of Central Arkansas Bears.

Saturday’s game, the 70th meeting between the two schools in a rivalry that dates back to 1923 will be a meeting between teams whose fortunes have been significantly different this season.

The Bears enter the game with a record of 7-2 with a 6-1 GSC mark. UCA is tied with Valdosta State, Arkansas Tech, and West Georgia for first place in the GSC with just two weeks to play.

“This team is one of the best teams Clint (Conque) has had at UCA,” said Boll Weevils head coach Gwaine Mathews. “He had an amazing team in 2001. This team’s offense might not be as good as that one but their defense makes up for it. All we can do is put our best foot forward and see what we can do. If we can make it a fourth-quarter game, we definitely aren’t going to quit.”

The Bears hold an all-time 43-21-5 advantage over the Weevils, and have been dominant in recent years. While UAM has won the last two meetings, UAM only managed two series wins between 1973 and 2002.

As the Bears prepare to leave the Gulf South Conference and join Division I Southland Conference next season, the Bears will try to capture an elusive Gulf South Conference championship and Division II playoff berth, playing their last two games against UAM and #9 Arkansas Tech.

The majority of the Bears’ success this season has come behind an offense that averages 37.8 points per game on 423.1 yards per game; while relying on a clutch defense that, despite allowing 308.3 yards per game, only surrenders 16.1 points per game.

The Bear attack is led on the ground by senior tailback Kentrel Rogers. Rogers earned GSC Player of the Week for his 185 yard, five-touchdown effort Saturday against Ouachita Baptist. Rogers is the GSC’s leading scorer, averaging 12.4 points per game and is third in rushing, averaging 88.3 yards per game.

Senior Chris Reil and freshman Nathan Brown have been sharing snaps under center for the Bears, with Brown getting the majority of snaps lately. The two passers are currently ranked #1 and #2 in the Gulf South Conference in passing efficiency. While both quarterbacks have put up similar numbers, combining for 2,362 passing yards and 19 touchdowns, there is no doubt that the Bears have a corps of talented receivers to throw to, led by 6-6 junior Aaron Fairooz.

Fairooz is the top receiver in the GSC, averaging 6.44 receptions and 102.9 yards per game, and has caught six touchdown passes this season.

“They’re real good on offense,” said Mathews. “This team’s balanced, they’re extremely versatile between the run and pass, and Kentrel Rogers is definitely one of the best backs in the conference.”

While UCA’s offense tops the league and has been consistently at the top all season, the Weevils have come along offensively and defensively and hope to surprise the Bears on Saturday.

Sophomore John L. Williams posted the fourth-best rushing day in UAM history against Arkansas Tech, rushing 38 times for 237 yards in a close loss.

Additionally, All-American wideout Von Mixon and sophomore Tim Harris have returned to the lineup to boost an offense that has started to find an identity in the late parts of the season.

“We’re not where we need to be yet,” said Mathews. “But, we’re competing. I’m going to stay positive. We’re going to hit the recruiting trail and before too long I think we’ll be in the thick of things.”

Wonder Boys Top Weevils Despite Williams' Big Day
October 22, 2005

MONTICELLO, AR --- John L. Williams rushed for 237 yards, fourth-most in UAM football history, but the #13 Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys went home winners, downing the University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils (1-8, 1-6 GSC) 31-21 at UAM’s homecoming today at Convoy Leslie-Cotton Boll Stadium.

Williams carried 38 times for 237 yards, just short of the record set by Jerry Bingham in 1978, when Bingham rushed for 261 yards against Southwestern College. Williams’ 237 yards were the most by a Weevil back since the 1991 season, when Roy Watkins scampered for 241 yards in a 47-40 win over Arkansas Tech.

The Weevils scored on their opening drive, capping a 12 play, 71-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run by Dakota Fitzgerald to take an early 7-0 lead. The Wonder Boys answered on their next drive; after converting a third-and-ten with a 24-yard strike, R.J. Vanhook capped the seven play, 57-yard drive with a seven-yard run to knot the game at 7-7.

The two teams carried the tie into the second quarter, when Tracey Stiger scrambled for a 22-yard touchdown run on the opening play of the quarter to give Arkansas Tech a 14-7 lead.

The Weevils answered immediately, as Anthony Rodriguez found Von Mixon with a 26-yard touchdown strike to knot the game at 14-14.

The Wonder Boys responded on the very next drive, as Campbell connected with Mark Caldwell on a 12-yard touchdown pass to give Tech a 21-14 lead. ATU extended their lead to 24-14 before halftime after a 19-yard field goal by Mark Ewersmann.

The two defenses held the offenses scoreless in the third quarter, and the Weevils struck back on their opening drive of the fourth quarter as Williams capped a six play, 68-yard drive with a 14-yard touchdown run to narrow Arkansas Tech’s lead to 24-21.

The Weevil defense forced Arkansas Tech to punt on their ensuing drive, but the UAM offense was unable to put anything together and eventually punted back to the Wonder Boys. The Wonder Boys marched downfield, and on fourth-and-5 from the UAM 16, Justin Ray found Caldwell in the end zone to extend the Wonder Boy lead to 31-21 and put the game out of reach.

Williams’ 237 yards were the most in the GSC by any running back this season, topping the previous mark of 206, also set by Williams at Ouachita Baptist.

Williams was 1-for-1 with 31 passing yards, and caught two passes for 20 yards.

Rodriguez was 6-of-13 for 80 yards and one touchdown strike. DeMathus Ledet led all players with 19 tackles.

The Boll Weevils return to action on Saturday, October 29, traveling to Conway to face Central Arkansas at Estes Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.

Bisons Top Weevils
October 13, 2005

Led by a two touchdown effort by Blake Smith, the Harding Bisons topped the University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils (1-7, 1-5 GSC) 32-14 tonight at Convoy Leslie-Cotton Boll Stadium in Monticello.

The Weevils turned in their best defensive half of the year in the first half, holding the Bisons scoreless until the 7:06 mark in the second quarter, when the Bisons took a 3-0 lead on a 37-yard field goal by Ben Davis.

UAM responded immediately, as John L. Williams capped a five play, 34-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run to give the Weevils a 7-3 lead on the very next series.

As time wound down in the first half, David Knighton connected with Heath Adams on a ten yard touchdown strike to put the Bisons on top. On the ensuing extra point, holder Cam Rowan mishandled the snap and ran the ball in for a two-point conversion, giving Harding a 11-7 halftime lead.

The Weevils held Harding to 35 rushing yards in the first half.

The Bisons struck quickly in the third quarter, capping their opening drive with a 15-yard touchdown run by Smith to extend their lead to 18-8. After forcing UAM to punt on their subsequent drive, Harding once again marched downfield, and Dondtray Thomas found the end zone this time after a 13-yard run, pushing Harding’s lead to 25-7.

Harding held their 25-7 lead going into the fourth quarter, and after Smith picked up his second touchdown run on a four-yard carry, the Bisons led 32-7.

The Weevils went three and out on their next drive, but forced a Harding fumble on their first play of the following drive; and on the second play, Anthony Rodriguez connected with Walter Warfield on a ten-yard touchdown strike to pull the Weevils to within 32-14.

Rodriguez was 10-of-15 for 101 yards with one touchdown and one interception. John L. Williams led all UAM rushers with 28 carries for 107 yards and one touchdown. Walter Warfield was UAM’s leading receiver with three catches for 38 yards and one touchdown.

Defensively, Solomon Edwards notched 12 tackles behind eight solos, and picked up one interception.

The Weevils return to action next Saturday, hosting Arkansas Tech University for homecoming. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m., with tailgating beginning at noon and the Walk of Champions set for 2:00 p.m.

Weevils Falter In Second Half As Ouachita Rolls
October 8, 2005

ARKADELPHIA, AR --- The University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils (1-6, 1-4 GSC) saw a 28-21 lead late in the second quarter evaporate as the Ouachita Baptist University Tigers reeled off thirty unanswered points en route to a 51-28 victory over UAM today at A.U. Williams Field in Arkadelphia.

The Weevils took charge early in the contest, as John L. Williams ran a draw 74 yards for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage, giving the Boll Weevils a 7-0 lead just 18 seconds into the game.

However, Ouachita answered back immediately, as the Tigers started their next drive on their own 46 yard line. On OBU’s first play from scrimmage, Taylor Carter connected with Slade Camp on a 40-yard strike to give the Tigers a first down at the UAM 14 yard line. After an offsides penalty against UAM, Don Rich took a nine-yard touchdown run to cap a two-play, 59-yard drive and tie the ballgame at 7-7.

The Weevils answered back immediately, as John L. Williams capped an eight play, 75-yard drive with a 13-yard touchdown run to give the Weevils a 14-7 lead.

The Tigers responded on the very next drive, as Taylor Carter found Slade Camp with a seven yard touchdown strike to even the game at 14-14.

OBU’s defense stepped up on the ensuing drive, forcing the Boll Weevils into a three-and-out. The Tigers started their drive on their own 37-yard line, and Rich picked up his second TD run of the day, capping a four play, 63-yard drive with a five yard touchdown run to put the Tigers up 21-14.

The Tigers carried the 21-14 lead into the second quarter, but on their first drive of the period, the UAM defense forced OBU to go three and out and DeMathus Ledet returned the OBU punt 29 yards to the OBU 18 yard line. On first down, Scott Carpino tied the game at 21-21 with an 18-yard touchdown run.

The Tigers were marching downfield on their next drive, when Carter connected with Clint Lahman on a screen pass. UAM’s Ryan Pilcher stripped the ball away and Jamarrick Johnson recovered the loose ball, giving the Boll Weevils a chance to take the lead yet again.

OBU’s defense forced UAM into a three-and-out, but on the punt, the Tigers were flagged for defensive holding, giving the Boll Weevils a fresh set of downs. The Weevils took advantage of their second chance, as Dakota Fitzgerald capped a 13 play, 50-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run to give the Weevils a 28-21 lead.

That would unfortunately be the last of the highlights for the Weevils.

The Tigers would tack on three points as Zac Wright nailed a 37-yard field goal to narrow the UAM lead to 28-24 at halftime.

The Tigers scored on their opening possession of the second half, as Julius Pruitt broke off a 29-yard touchdown run, capping a five play, 47-yard drive and giving OBU a 31-28 lead just over a minute into the second half.

The Tigers continued their streak of big plays, as Carter connected with Bruce Steele on a 49-yard touchdown strike to give the Tigers a 38-28 lead with 6:37 left in the third period.

Wright kicked his second field goal of the night, this time from 40 yards out to give OBU a 41-28 lead as the third quarter came to a close.

Once again, another big play resulted in another seven points for the Tigers as Carter found Steele on the receiving end of a 43-yard touchdown strike to extend the OBU lead to 48-28. The Tigers tacked on their final score on a 22-yard field goal by Wright with 7:58 remaining.

Williams had a career day for the Weevils, with 30 carries for 206 yards and two touchdowns. With his 200-yard game, Williams becomes the first Boll Weevil to rush for over 200 yards in a game since Corwin Elliott in 2001 against Delta State. Anthony Rodriguez completed 6-of-16 passes for 68 yards, and Jaleel Harris led the Weevils with two receptions for 20 yards.

For the Tigers, Rich had 30 carries for 154 yards and two scores, and Carter connected on 11-of-18 passes for 240 yards and three touchdowns.

The Boll Weevils return to action on Thursday, October 13 hosting Harding University in a game that will be televised regionally on CSS (Comcast/Charter Sports South) and Cox Sports as part of the Gulf South Conference’s television package. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., with tailgating beginning at 4 p.m. and the Walk of Champions at 5 p.m.

The game will be broadcast locally on KWRF-FM 105.5 in Warren and KXFE-FM 106.9 in Dumas, and televised locally on Monticello cable channel 31.

Ledet Named GSC Defensive Player of the Week
October 4, 2005

BIRMINGHAM, AL --- University of Arkansas at Monticello free safety DeMathus Ledet has been named Gulf South Conference Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts in last Saturday’s loss to Southern Arkansas.

Ledet is the first Weevil to earn Defensive Player of the Week honors this season, and the second UAM player to earn Player of the Week honors after Anthony Rodriguez earned special teams honors earlier this season.

The senior was all over the field on Saturday for the Boll Weevils, racking up 14 total tackles with four solo stops. Ledet also had a hand in three of SAU’s five turnovers, grabbing two interceptions for 67 yards and recovering a fumble. Ledet also broke up two passes.

“I think DeMathus is definitely deserving of this award,” said Boll Weevils head coach Gwaine Mathews. “His work ethic is unmatched every day at practice. It’s a shame that I will only have one year to coach him.”

Also earning honors this week are Central Arkansas quarterback Nathan Brown and Henderson State punter Bryan Woodard.

Brown is the first UCA player to collect honors this season, leading the Bears to a thrilling, 29-26, double-overtime home win over No. 14 North Alabama.  The redshirt freshman celebrated his first career start, completing 25-of-34 passes for 280 yards and three touchdowns including the game-winner in double-overtime.  The Russellville, AR native completed his first 10 passes leading the UCA to a 16-0 first-half lead.  Brown’s threw two go-ahead, 10-yard TD passes to Aaron Fairooz and found Che Jones in the endzone from four yards out to seal the upset.

Woodard is the first Henderson State player to earn Special Teams honors since 2003, leading the HSU special teams in a 23-0 victory at Harding.  The sophomore pulled double-duty for the Reddies, booting three punts for 152 yards (50.8 average) including a long of 56 yards and one inside the 20-yard line.  Woodard also shined at placekicker, nailing 3-of-4 field goals and going 2-for-2 on point-after attempts.  The Arlington, Texas native started the game, setting the school record for the longest field goal in a game, nailing a 48-yarder with 6:22 remaining in the first quarter.  Woodard did not stop there making a 30 yarder in the second quarter and a 45 yarder with 9:01 left to play.

Muleriders Roll Past Weevils
October 1, 2005

MONTICELLO --- Using a tenacious running attack, the Southern Arkansas Muleriders downed the University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils (1-5, 1-3) 52-21 tonight at Convoy Leslie-Cotton Boll Stadium in Monticello.

SAU’s defense caused the Weevils to go three-and-out on their opening drive, and the Mulerider offense responded with a score on the very first drive, capping an eight play, 73-yard drive with a three-yard touchdown run by D.D. Holyfield.

The Weevils responded almost immediately, as Anthony Rodriguez connected with Tim Harris on a 63-yard touchdown strike to knot the game at 7-7.

The Muleriders marched downfield on their next drive, finishing off an eight play, 60-yard drive with a six-yard touchdown run by Holyfield, his second of the game. SAU made it 21-7 on their next drive as Josh SanFilippo found Torrance Hoye with a 38-yard touchdown strike to finish a three-play, 58-yard drive that covered 45 seconds.

The Muleriders took the 28-7 advantage into the second quarter, and scored on their first drive of the period on a four yard run by Keundric Loucious to take a 28-7 lead.

The Weevils cut the margin to 21-14 after Anthony Rodriguez completed an eleven yard pass on third down to Jaleel Harris, and looked to have momentum in their corner when Reynaldo Veal intercepted a SanFilippo pass and returned it to the UAM 48 yard line.

Unfortunately, the Weevil offense was unable to muster any offense and punted on their fourth play of the drive.

SAU carried their 28-14 advantage into the half, but recovered an onside kick to open the half and marched 46 yards downfield, scoring on a 35-yard touchdown strike from SanFilippo to Hoye to give SAU a 35-14 lead.

The Muleriders extended their lead to 42-14 on their next drive as SanFilippo found Hoye once again, this time from 19 yards out to cap a five play, 78-yard drive.

The Boll Weevils fought back on the following drive, going 86 yards in eleven plays, topped off by a 37-yard touchdown run by Scott Carpino to pull the Weevils to within 42-21.

However, the Muleriders were there with an answer yet again, as Ryan Sworn returned the next kickoff 63 yards to the UAM 23, and SanFilippo found Johnny Fields open in the end zone to extend the SAU lead to 49-21.

SAU tacked on their final score on the first play of the fourth quarter as David Korff connected on a 42-yard field goal to push the Muleriders ahead 52-21.

Rodriguez completed 8-of-28 passes for 131 yards and two touchdowns, while John L. Williams led the Boll Weevils with 90 yards on 24 carries. Carpino had eight carries for 70 yards and one touchdown.

Jaleel Harris was UAM’s leading receiver, snagging four catches for 45 yards and a touchdown. Harris was the only Weevil receiver to catch more than one pass.

Jordan Wisener led all players with 18 tackles, while Wes Ables added 15 and DeMathus Ledet chipped in 14 tackles and two interceptions.

The Muleriders racked up 329 yards on the ground, keyed by a 11 carry, 115-yard night by SanFilippo and a 15 carry, 108-yard, two touchdown night from Holyfield.

San Filippo was equally effective throwing the ball, completing 8-of-14 passes for 187 yards and four touchdowns, with two interceptions. Torrance Hoye was SAU’s leading receiver, hauling in five passes for 130 yards and three touchdowns.

The Weevils return to action Saturday, October 8 as they travel to Arkadelphia for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff against the Ouachita Baptist Tigers at A.U. Williams Field.
