Three Blossoms Earn All-GSC Honors, Taju Named GSC-West Player of the Year
November 2, 2006

BIRMINGHAM, AL --- Three University of Arkansas at Monticello Cotton Blossoms volleyball players earned All-Gulf South Conference honors, highlighted by the selection of Katherine Taju (Sr., Panama City, Panama) as Gulf South Conference-West Division Player of the Year.

Taju was also a selection to the All-Gulf South Conference First Team, and was joined by Second Team selections Kameshia Melton (Jr., Grapevine, Texas) and Amanda Sayre (Sr., Del City, Okla.). Taju becomes the first Cotton Blossoms player to win Player of the Year honors, earning the nod in the program’s second year of existence.

Taju was an offensive force for the Blossoms this season, leading the GSC and ranking 14th nationally in kills per game (4.74). Taju earned three GSC Player of the Week selections, holds four of the top ten, including the three highest kill marks in the GSC this season, going over 30 kills in a match twice this season.

Sayre becomes the Blossoms’ first two-time honoree after earning her second Second Team nod. Sayre ranked seventh in the GSC in kills per game (3.79), and second on the team in the same category. Sayre is UAM’s all-time kills leader, with 864 total for her career.

Melton earns her first selection after averaging 3.12 kills per game, third on the team, and finishing second on the team with 0.98 blocks per game and a team-best 115 total blocks on the season (36 solo, 79 assisted).

“It’s pretty exciting to be a second-year program and have three players make all conference,” said Cotton Blossoms head coach Nicole Smith. “It’s an honor and it speaks well for the program that as a second year program we were able to have the Player of the Year on our team. We knew all along what (Katherine’s) ability was and what she was capable of doing.”

The Cotton Blossoms will return to the court Friday, November 3 in the opening round of the Gulf South Conference tournament with a 7:30 p.m. match against tournament host North Alabama.
