Blossoms Sweep Grambling

GRAMBLING, LA ---  Amanda Sayre (Sr., Del City, Okla) notched 15 kills to lead the University of Arkansas at Monticello Cotton Blossoms (17-14) to a 3-0 sweep of the Grambling Lady Tigers Monday night in Grambling, Louisiana.

The Blossoms swept the match by scores of 30-25, 30-18, and 30-24.

Grambling’s Lacey Cormier led all players with 18 kills. Kameshia Melton (Jr., Grapevine, Texas) added 11 kills, and Katherine Taju (Sr., Panama City, Panama) added ten in the victory. Maegan Martin (So., Burnet, Texas) dished out 32 assists, while Taju led UAM with 18 digs and Amie Kronk (Sr., San Antonio, Texas) added 12.

UAM out-hit Grambling .391 to .206, hitting at a .520 clip in the second game. 

The win concludes the regular season for the Cotton Blossoms, who will now prepare to face GSC-East Champion North Alabama in the opening round of the Gulf South Conference tournament on Friday, November 3. The match is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
 
Blossoms Stop Christian Brothers, Qualify For GSC Tournament

MONTICELLO --- Led by a 29-kill performance from Katherine Taju (Sr., Panama City, Panama), the University of Arkansas at Monticello Cotton Blossoms (16-14, 6-6 GSC) picked up a 3-1 victory over the Christian Brothers University Lady Buccaneers on Friday night at Steelman Fieldhouse. With the win, the Blossoms earn the fourth and final seed from the West Division for the Gulf South Conference Championship Tournament.

The GSC tournament will be held November 3-4 on the campus of the University of North Alabama, and the Blossoms will face host North Alabama in the opening round of the single-elimination tournament. 

Taju notched her 500th kill of the season in the opening game.

The Blossoms picked up a 30-23 victory in the opening game, but the Lady Bucs tied the match at 1-1 with a 33-31 victory in game two. UAM outhit CBU .667 to .033 in game three en route to a 30-13 rout, and picked up a 30-24 victory in the fourth game to seal the match victory.

Amanda Sayre (Sr., Del City, Okla.) added 20 kills and Kameshia Melton (Sr., Grapevine, Texas) added 13. Maegan Martin (So., Burnet, Texas) dished out 64 assists and Amie Kronk (Sr., San Antonio, Texas) led UAM with 15 digs. Sayre (15) and Taju (12) both added double-digit digs.

The Cotton Blossoms will return to action Monday, October 30, as they travel to Grambling for their final regular-season match. The match will begin at 6 p.m.
 

Blossoms Snap Seven-Match Skid, Top SAU

MAGNOLIA --- Katherine Taju (Sr., Panama City, Panama) led the University of Arkansas at Monticello Cotton Blossoms (15-14, 5-6 GSC) with 25 kills as the Blossoms topped Southern Arkansas 3-1 at the W.T. Watson Athletic Center on Tuesday night. The win snapped a seven-match losing streak for the Cotton Blossoms.

The Blossoms picked up a 31-29 victory in the opening game, but the Lady Muleriders knotted the contest in the second game with a 30-22 victory. UAM closed out the match with 30-23 and 30-27 victories in games three and four.

Taju’s 25 kills led all players. Amanda Sayre (Sr., Del City, Okla) added 15 kills and Kameshia Melton (Jr., Grapevine, Texas) added 10. Maegan Martin (So., Burnet, Texas) dished out 46 assists, while Amie Kronk (Sr., San Antonio, Texas) added 36 digs. Taju (24), Sayre (21), Martin (16), and Kara Simnacher (Fr., Victoria, Texas) (14) added double-digit digs.

The Cotton Blossoms will play their final home match of the season Friday, October 27, hosting Christian Brothers on Senior Day. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
 

Blossoms Swept By Ouachita

ARKADELPHIA --- The University of Arkansas at Monticello Cotton Blossoms’ woes continued as the Blossoms (14-14, 4-6 GSC) suffered a 3-0 setback at the hands of the Ouachita Baptist University Lady Tigers on Tuesday at Vining Arena.

The Blossoms fell by scores of 30-16, 30-21, and 30-24.

Amanda Sayre (Sr., Del City, Okla.) led the Blossoms with 11 kills. Maegan Martin (So., Burnet, Texas) dished out 21 assists and Amie Kronk (Sr., San Antonio, Texas) led UAM with 18 digs, while Katherine Taju (Sr., Panama City, Panama) and Sayre both added double-digit digs, with 15 and 13, respectively.

The Cotton Blossoms return to action on Tuesday, October 24, as they travel to Magnolia to face Southern Arkansas. The match begins at 7 p.m.
 

Blossoms Drop Two On Final Day Of HSU Classic

MONTICELLO --- The University of Arkansas at Monticello Cotton Blossoms’ (14-13) struggles continued as they dropped a pair of matches on the final day of the Henderson State Classic, falling 3-1 to Emporia State and 3-2 to Pittsburg State.

With the second loss, UAM has now lost six consecutive matches.

In the opener against Emporia, the Blossoms fell 30-19 and 30-24 in the first two games before rallying to pull the match to within 2-1 after a 30-25 win in game three; however, Emporia State clinched the match with a 30-27 victory in game four.

Kameshia Melton (Jr., Grapevine, Texas) led UAM with 17 kills while Katherine Taju (Sr., Panama City, Panama) added 14. Maegan Martin (So., Burnet, Texas) dished out 32 assists while Amie Kronk (Sr., San Antonio, Texas) added 23 digs. 

ESU’s Arica Sheppard led all players with 22 kills and a .386 hitting percentage.

In the finale against Pittsburg State, the Blossoms jumped out to a 2-0 lead after winning 30-28 and 30-27, but PSU tied the match with 30-19 and 30-20 victories in games three and four. In the fifth and decisive game, PSU picked up a 15-13 victory.

Taju led the Blossoms with 19 kills, while Amanda Sayre (Sr., Del City, Okla) added 16 and Melton added 14. Martin dished out 60 assists, while Kronk led UAM with 17 digs. Taju (11) and Martin (10) also notched double-digit digs for the Blossoms.

The Blossoms return to action on Tuesday, October 17 as they travel to Ouachita Baptist to face the Tigers at Vining Arena. The match begins at 7 p.m.
 

Blossoms Drop Two At HSU Classic

ARKADELPHIA --- The University of Arkansas at Monticello Cotton Blossoms (14-11) dropped a pair of matches to nationally-ranked teams, falling 3-1 to 12th- ranked Washburn and 3-1 to 25th-ranked Missouri Southern at the Henderson State Classic.

Washburn (20-4) won the opening game 32-30, but the Blossome tied the match with a 30-28 game two victory. Washburn closed out the match with 30-26 and 30-28 victories in games three and four.

Katherine Taju (Sr., Panama City, Panama) led UAM with 30 kills to lead all players, while Amanda Sayre (Sr., Del City, Okla.) added 16 kills and Kameshia Melton (Jr., Grapevine, Texas) added 13. Maegan Martin (So., Burnet, Texas) dished out 63 assists, while Sayre led UAM with 23 digs, Amie Kronk (Sr., San Antonio, Texas) added 22, and both Taju and Sara Kindred (Fr., Frisco, Texas) added 11 in the loss. 

Washburn outhit the Blossoms .225 to .197.

The Blossoms fell in the nightcap against Missouri Southern (22-6) after losing the opening two games 30-26 and 30-27. UAM pulled to within 2-1 after winning game three 30-25, but Missouri Southern picked up a 30-27 victory in the fourth and decisive game to seal their victory.

Taju was once again red-hot, leading all players with 27 kills, while Sayre (15) and Melton (13) once again added double-digit kills. Martin dished out a match-best 61 assists, while Kronk led UAM with 24 digs.

The Blossoms return to action on Saturday, facing both Emporia State and Pittsburg State on day two of the HSU Classic. Saturday’s opening match begins at 9 a.m.
 

Blossoms Fall To Harding

MONTICELLO --- The University of Arkansas at Monticello Cotton Blossoms (14-9, 4-5 GSC) were unable to overcome a 16-kill effort from Manuela Nesheva and a 11-kill effort from Tiffany Morrison, as they fell 3-0 to the first-place Harding Bisons (18-5, 9-0 GSC) on Thursday night at Steelman Fieldhouse.

After falling 30-26 in a close opening game, the Blossoms were slow to get started in the second game, falling 30-15, and then fell 30-24 in the finale.

Katherine Taju (Sr., Panama City, Panama) notched 14 kills to lead UAM, while Amanda Sayre (Sr., Del City, Okla.) added 11. Maegan Martin (So., Burnet, Texas) dished out 23 assists, while Amie Kronk (Sr., San Antonio, Texas) added 14 digs.

After hitting .240 in the opening game, the Blossoms hit -.088 and .025 in the second and third games.

The Blossoms return to action on Friday, as they face Washburn and Missouri Southern on day one of the Henderson State Classic. Friday’s first match is scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
 

Blossoms Fall In Four To Henderson

MONTICELLO --- Henderson State’s Rose Euppah notched a match-high 21 kills to lead the Lady Reddies (16-7, 5-3 GSC) to a 3-1 victory over the University of Arkansas at Monticello Cotton Blossoms (14-8, 4-4) on Tuesday at Steelman Fieldhouse.

The Blossoms fell 32-30 in the opening game, and then knotted the match at 1-1 after winning 30-28 in the second game before falling 30-25 and 30-23 in the third and fourth games.

With nine total blocks, four solo and five assisted; Kameshia Melton (Jr., Grapevine, Texas) broke the UAM record for blocks in a match.

Katherine Taju (Sr., Panama City, Panama) and Amanda Sayre (Sr., Del City, Okla.) both led the Blossoms with 15 kills, while Melton added 13 and Nicole Ferguson (Fr., Brentwood, Tenn.) added 10. Maegan Martin (So., Burnet, Texas) dished out 49 assists, and Amie Kronk (Sr., San Antonio, Texas) led UAM with 17 digs, Martin and Taju added 16 apiece, Sayre added 12 and Ferguson added 11.

The Blossoms return to action on Thursday, October 12, hosting Harding University. The match is scheduled for 6 p.m.
 

Blossoms Roll Past Grambling

MONTICELLO --- Four players notched double-digit kills as the University of Arkansas at Monticello Cotton Blossoms (14-7) rolled to a 3-1 victory over the Grambling State University Lady Tigers on Saturday at Steelman Fieldhouse.

The Blossoms outhit Grambling .301 to .124 for the match, hitting over .300 in games one, two, and four.

UAM won a 30-24 decision in the opening game and a 30-14 victory in game two; but the Lady Tigers rallied to win game three 30-26. The Blossoms held off a determined Lady Tigers team in the fourth and final game as UAM picked up the victory, 30-25.

Amanda Sayre (Sr., Del City, Okla.) led all players with 19 kills, while Kameshia Melton (Jr., Grapevine, Texas) added 14 kills, Katherine Taju (Sr., Panama City, Panama) added 12, and Nicole Ferguson (Fr., Brentwood, Tenn.) added 10. Courtney Fletcher (Fr., Eddy, Texas) dished out 52 assists.

Amie Kronk (Sr., San Antonio, Texas) led the way for UAM with 17 digs, while Sayre added 14 and Fletcher added 11.

The Cotton Blossoms will return to action on Tuesday, October 10, as they host Henderson State at Steelman FIeldhouse. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m.
 

Blossoms Swept By Arkansas Tech

MONTICELLO, AR --- The University of Arkansas at Monticello Cotton Blossoms (13-7, 4-3 GSC) were out-hit .295 to .216 as they fell 3-0 to the Arkansas Tech Golden Suns on Thursday night in Russellville.

The Blossoms fell 30-28 in the opener, and the Golden Suns picked up momentum through the match, winning the second and third games 30-21 and 30-23.

Amanda Sayre (Sr., Del City, Okla.) led UAM with 20 kills, while Katherine Taju (Sr., Panama City, Panama) added 15. Maegan Martin (So., Burnet, Texas) dished out 38 assists while Amie Kronk (Sr., San Antonio, Texas) added 11 digs.

The Blossoms return to action on Saturday, hosting Grambling State University. The match is scheduled for 5 p.m.
 

Ferguson Sets New UAM Hitting Record As Blossoms Sweep Texas Southern

MONTICELLO, AR  --- Nicole Ferguson (Fr., Brentwood, Tenn.) set a new school record for hitting percentage, hitting .786 to break her previous school record (.625) set September 21 against Ouachita Baptist as the University of Arkansas at Monticello Cotton Blossoms (13-6) swept Texas Southern 3-0 at Steelman Fieldhouse on Wednesday.

The Blossoms won the opener 30-24, game two 30-25, and game three 30-23.

Kara Simnacher (Fr., Victoria, Texas) and Kameshia Melton (Jr., Grapevine, Texas) both notched 12 kills, while Ferguson and Amanda Sayre (Sr., Del City, Okla.) both added 12 kills. Maegan Martin (So., Burnet, Texas) dished out 40 assists, while Amie Kronk (Sr., San Antonio, Texas) added 12 digs.

The Cotton Blossoms return to action on Thursday, October 5, as they travel to Russellville to resume their Gulf South Conference schedule against Arkansas Tech. The match begins at 7 p.m.
 

Blossoms Sweep Southern Arkansas
October 3, 2006
 

MONTICELLO, AR --- Led by a 13-kill effort by Katherine Taju (Sr., Panama City, Panama), the University of Arkansas at Monticello Cotton Blossoms (12-6, 4-2 GSC) swept the Southern Arkansas Lady Muleriders 3-0 on Tuesday night at Steelman Fieldhouse.

The Blossoms cruised to 30-21 and 30-23 victories in the first and second games, but SAU closed the gap in the third match, with UAM eventually winning 30-28.

Taju was the only player in the match to register double-digit kills, while Maegan Martin (So., Burnet, Texas) dished out 34 assists and Amie Kronk (Sr., San Antonio, Texas) notched 16 digs. UAM outhit SAU .136 to .030 for the match, with Martin leading both teams with a .571 hitting percentage, notching five kills and one error in seven attacks.

The Cotton Blossoms will return to action on Wednesday at 6 p.m., as they host Texas Southern University of the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
