MONTICELLO --- The
University of Arkansas at Monticello Cotton Blossoms (5-9, 0-1
GSC) were unable to keep pace with a red-hot Henderson State
Lady Reddies (12-3, 2-0 GSC) squad, as the Lady Reddies picked
up a 3-0 victory on Thursday at Steelman Fieldhouse.
The Lady
Reddies and Cotton Blossoms fought back-and-forth in the opening
game, until HSU opened up a five-point (16-11) advantage. The
Lady Reddies would continue to build distance en route to a
30-20 victory in the opening game.
HSU jumped
out to a 7-0 lead in the second game before the Cotton Blossoms
were able to score their first point, and then scored the next
14 points to take a 21-1 lead. UAM rallied late to pull to
within 30-12 at the end of game two.
The Cotton
Blossoms took charge in the third game, racing out to an 18-8
lead before the Lady Reddies staged a rally of their own,

| Blossoms To
Host Henderson State in GSC "Match of the Week" |
September 19, 2007

BIRMINGHAM, AL—The
GSC conference slate opens full throttle this week, with
league action kicking up in both divisions. The second
installment of the GSC Volleyball “Match of the Week” takes
us to Monticello, Ark. as Henderson State takes on UAM on
Thursday night.
The host team comes in on a bit of a dive, with the Cotton
Blossoms sporting a 5-8 record heading into the match. UAM’s
schedule has been tough, with the squad playing all but one
of those games away from the friendly confines of Steelman
Coliseum. That won’t be the case on Thursday night, as UAM
will hope to keep it home record unblemished when the Lady
Reddies come to town.
UAM head coach Nicole Smith’s team started strong, winning
four out of their first six before hitting a slide the past
two weekends. The Cotton Blossoms are a defensive minded
squad, ranking in the top five in the league in service aces
and digs.
Offensively, UAM senior Kameshia Melton has anchored Cotton
Blossom attack from the outside. Melton leads the squad with
184 kills, 30 more than any of her teammates. Her 3.76 kills
per game average is a top 10 mark in the GSC, and she also
ranks second on the squad with a .285 hitting percentage.
Henderson State is off to another good start, posting a West
Division best 10-3 mark heading into conference action. HSU
has shown they can compete within the league as well,
sporting a 3-0 mark against their East Division
counterparts. Head coach Rhonda Thigpen’s squad is doing it
on both sides of the net, quickly becoming one of the most
complete teams in the GSC.
The Lady Reddies also sport two of the league’s premier
defensive players in Edith Musebe and Bethany Wright. The
reigning players of the week have keyed a defensive attack
that is second in the league in blocks.
Musebe is in the midst of a historic season, already
shattering two Lady Reddie single game records 13 matches
into her final campaign. The Nairobi, Kenya, native had 15
total blocks in a match, and one day later followed it up
with nine solo blocks to claim another mark.
Wright has been a steady presence in the back row, averaging
5.67 digs per match. Last season’s “Freshman of the Year”
has seven matches with over 20 digs, and has posted double
digit digs in all but one match this season.
