Box Score MONTICELLO, Ark. – The UAM football team dropped its first home game of the season in dramatic fashion tonight at Covoy Leslie Cotton Boll Stadium, 46-47.
A turnover at the end of the fourth quarter cost the Boll Weevils (3-5) their perfect home record. Willie Landers lost the ball on the NSU 14 with the Weevils up five, 46-41. The River Hawks (5-3) capitalized with a 13-play drive from their own 20 all the way down to the end zone that gave them the one point lead, 47-46, after they missed on the two-point conversion attempt.
The drive by NSU ate up 5:03 of the remaining time on the clock, leaving the UAM offense just 18 seconds to drive the length of the field. The game ended with an interception as Damon Wicker tried to pull out the Hail Mary to steal back the win.
The game took three hours and 24 minutes to come to a conclusion, with both teams racking up 166 offensive plays on the game. On top of that, both teams committed a lot of penalties. Each team had 11 penalties, Northeastern lost 134 yards to flags while the Weevils had 103 penalty yards.
Of the combined 15 scoring drives only two of them ended in field goals, both kicked by NSU’s Drew Patton. The game went back-and-forth all day, with neither team able to build up a substantial lead. The Weevils had two failed extra-point kicks. The first came after UAM’s first touchdown, 51-yard pass completion to Willie Landers, Ryan Crowley’s attempt sailed wide left. The second was a blocked kick by Reagan Wise.
Willie Landers’ 51-yard reception was the longest for the Weevils on the day. The senior from El Dorado also had a 31-yarder at the end of the second quarter for his second touchdown of the day. He finished with seven receptions for 143 yards.
Damon Wicker threw for three touchdowns, the third coming to D.J. Stephens in the second quarter, off 25 completions for 320 yards. He ran for 129 yards, including two touchdowns of his own. Nakita Myles shared duties on the ground with 10 carries for 72 yards and two touchdowns.
The Weevils will remain at home next week as they celebrate Homecoming on Saturday, October 29 against the Southeast Oklahoma State Savage Storm. Game time is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
