After trailing for the entire game, the Christian Brothers Lady Buccaneers outscored the University of Arkansas at Monticello women’s basketball team 11-4 in the final three minutes of regulation to record a 62-61 win on Saturday inside Canale Arena.

The Cotton Blossoms (2-2) led by as much as 12 points in the first half on two different occasions and held a 10-point lead of 48-38 with 9:53 remaining in the second half, but the Lady Bucs (2-2) posted a 7-1 scoring run over the next four minutes to cut UAM’s lead to four points with 5:19 remaining.

Both teams exchanged baskets over the next four minutes before CBU posted a quick 6-0 run to force the game’s first tie at 57-all following a fast-break layup from Breanna Ridgell with 1:16 left on the clock. Less than a minute later, UAM’s Catherine Puckett sunk a layup with 26 seconds remaining to give UAM a 61-59 lead.

CBU’s Candis Clear nailed a three-pointer on the other end with 11 seconds remaining to finalize the scoring. UAM’s Jordan Goforth missed a potential game-winning jump shot with two seconds remaining.

UAM was led in scoring by junior Demetra Howlingwolf, junior Raija McWright and freshman Logan Hammonds with nine points each. Junior Ashley Qualls added eight points. Freshman Donlicia James, who had totaled three consecutive double-doubles before Saturday’s game, led UAM with six rebounds, but was held to just two points after going 0-for-6 from the field.

As a team, UAM shot 40 percent from the field (20-of-50), 53 percent on three-pointers (8-of-15) and 62 percent on foul shots (13-of-21). CBU shot 43 percent from the field (24-of-56), 21 percent on three-pointers (3-of-14) and 79 percent on foul shots (11-of-14).

CBU’s Breanna Ridgell led all players with 18 points. Candis Clear and Sarah Combs also reached double-digits in scoring for CBU with 13 and 11 points, respectively.

The Cotton Blossoms enter the Great American Conference portion of its 2012-13 schedule this week with trips to Southwestern Oklahoma State on Thursday, November 29 and Northwestern Oklahoma State on December 1.
