February 23, 2008
BENTONVILLE, Ark. – Meredith Heckel
blasted her sixth homerun of the season, helping the University
of Arkansas at Monticello softball team beat Missouri Southern State
6-1 on Saturday in Bentonville at the Lady Tiger Softball Complex.
Heckel (Hot Springs, Ark.) added another RBI to her day by
drawing a bases loaded walk that scored senior Kate Brady
(Longview, Texas) in the top of the bottom of the sixth inning.
Heckel’s homerun came in the bottom of the first inning, marking her
third leadoff homerun of the season.
UAM struck again in the bottom of the third inning when sophomore
Becca Tipton (Dermott, Ark.) smashed a two-RBI-double to
left-center field that scored Heckel, who reached on a walk, and
junior Savannah Morin (Ponca City, Okla.), who reached on a
MSSU error.
In the bottom of the fifth, UAM took a 4-0 advantage when senior
Jenny Dunn (Adelaide, Australia) hit an RBI-double to left field
that scored junior Lindsey Randall (Keithville, La.), who
reached base two batters earlier on a single to center field.
After Brady scored in the sixth inning, junior Amy Mardis
(Burnet, Texas) scored off Randall’s RBI-single to right field.
Junior Becca Sustaire (Hallsville, Texas) recorded a complete
game win, pitching seven innings, allowing only one run off five
hits. Sustaire recorded her season high with seven strikeouts.
Originally, the two teams were scheduled to play a doubleheader on
Saturday, but the weather forced the second game of the twin-bill to
be cancelled. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Sunday, Feb.
24, starting at 12 p.m. in Bentonville.
The Blossoms improve their overall season record to 2-10 with the
win over Missouri Southern.
