ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello women’s basketball team shot 67 percent from the field in the second half, but 23 turnovers and 22 percent shooting in the first half resulted in a 54-59 loss to Henderson State on Thursday at the Duke Wells Center.
The loss for UAM (7-9, 1-3 GSC-West) marks the third straight defeat and matches the loss total from a season ago, when the team went 21-9 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Sophomore Chelsea Johnson led all scorers with 14 points after connecting on 4-of-9 field goal attempts, 2-of-7 three-pointers and a 4-of-4 from the free-throw line. Junior Nykita Gordon also reached double-figures with 11 points.
As a team, UAM shot 43.2 percent from the field (19-of-44), 25 percent from three-point range (6-of-24) and 71.4 percent from the charity stripe (10-of-14).
The Lady Reddies (11-8, 2-2 GSC-West) ended a four-game losing streak against UAM with 40.4 percent field goal shooting (21-of-52), 17.6 percent from three-point range (3-of-17) and 53.8 percent from the free-throw line (14-of-26).
Janisha Young led the Lady Reddies with 11 points, while teammate Jazmine Ellis also reached double-figures with 10 points.
The Cotton Blossoms return to Steelman Field House for their next matchup, a 2 p.m. tipoff against Harding this Saturday, January 23 inside Steelman Field House.
