SOUTH ALABAMA DOWNS UAM 31-14 IN SEASON FINALE

MOBILE, Ala. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello football team concluded the 2010 season with a 31-14 loss to South Alabama on Thursday night at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.

 

South Alabama (10-0) extended its streak to 17 consecutive victories after outscoring UAM (4-7) 24-14 in the second half.

 

The Boll Weevils held the Jaguars to only one score in the first half, a 6-yard touchdown pass from C.J. Bennett to Jereme Jones with 21 seconds remaining in the half to cap a 10-play, 81-yard drive that used 2:31.

 

The Jaguars used a 60-yard kickoff return by T.J. Glover on the opening kickoff of the second half to set up a 27-yard field goal by Lawson McGlon to put USA on top 10-0 with 12:41 left in the third quarter.

 

UAM answered on its next offensive possession with a 34-yard touchdown run by junior Greg Taylor to cap a seven-play, 76-yard drive that used 3:52. That score tightened USA’s lead to 10-7 with 8:49 remaining in the third quarter.

 

The Jaguars offense responded with 21 unanswered points with a 4-yard touchdown pass from Bennett to Kevin Helms at the 6:51 mark of the third quarter, a 4-yard touchdown run by Kendall Houston with 2:27 left in the third and a 6-yard touchdown run by T.J. Glover with 10:50 left in the fourth quarter.

 

After senior Carlton Johnson intercepted a C.J. Bennett pass and put together a 25-yard return, Greg Taylor was responsible for putting points on the scoreboard for UAM once again, this time a 5-yard touchdown pass from senior Scott Buisson to finalize the scoring at 31-14 in favor of the Jaguars.

 

Buisson finished the contest 6-of-13 passing with 102 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He was sacked twice. He also led the UAM rushing attack with 19 carries for 91 yards.

 

Junior Nakita Myles added 19 carries for 70 yards. Taylor finished with six carries for 53 yards, including his 34-yard touchdown run.

 

In addition to his interception, Carlton Johnson totaled a game-high and season-high 14 tackles in the loss, including one sack for a loss of seven yards. Senior Vincent Jackson also reached double-digits with 10 total tackles.

 

Junior punter Derek Jambon’s name will replace Dickie Dunn’s in the UAM record book for the best punting average in a single-season. The Marrero, La. native finished the year with 52 punts for 2,308 yards for an average of 44.4 yards per punt. Of his 52 punts this year, 14 went for at least 50 yards and 17 were downed inside the opponent’s 20-yard line. In the loss to South Alabama, Jambon had five punts for 219 total yards, an average of 43.8 yards per punt.
