MATHEWS STEPPING DOWN AT UAM

MONTICELLO – Gwaine Mathews has announced his resignation as head football coach at the University of Arkansas at Monticello.

“I am resigning today to take another job,” said Mathews. “It has been tough not seeing Brishen play (at Ole Miss) and it is a better deal for me and my family. I care about our players and want them to get the best head coach.”

Mathews just completed his sixth year as UAM’s head coach. He led the Boll Weevils to an overall record of 22-44 during his tenure, highlighted by a 7-4 record in 2008, when his team led the Gulf South Conference in total offense and rushing offense.

Also during his tenure, Mathews coached 20 All-GSC selections and 11 All-South Region selections.  In addition to coaching, Mathews joined with campaign volunteers and athletic staff in recent fund raising activities that have resulted in upgrades to the stadium, construction of the Indoor Practice Facility and a new athletic weight room that will be open after the first of the year.

“UAM is very grateful for the dedication of Coach Mathews for the past six seasons,” said UAM Athletics Director Chris Ratcliff. “We certainly understand his decision to move on and wish him nothing but the best.”

The search for a replacement will begin immediately and continue until the position has been filled.
