2010 SPRING FOOTBALL REPORT

Staff Additions, Spring Game and Scout Visits

MONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas at Monticello football team recently completed its spring preparations for the 2010 season, which included hiring of two offensive assistant coaches, testing from professional scouts and the annual Spring Game.

JOSH EARGLE AND KYLE MANLEY JOIN COACHING STAFF
UAM Head Coach Gwaine Mathews has announced the additions of Josh Eargle and Kyle Manley as offensive assistant coaches.

Josh Eargle has been hired as the team’s offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. Eargle comes to UAM after spending the 2009 season as the offensive quality control coordinator and offensive line coach for Louisiana State University. Prior to LSU, Earle spent two seasons (2007-08) as the recruiting coordinator, offensive line coach and tight ends coach at Nicholls State University. The Brownwood, Texas native has also served as an assistant coach at Southern Mississippi (2003-05, 2006) and at Gulf South Conference in-state rival, Ouachita Baptist (2005).

Eargle is a 2001 graduate of the University of Memphis with a bachelor’s degree in exercise and sport science. He earned a master’s degree in 2004 from Southern Mississippi in sports administration.

“This is the most experienced offensive coordinator I have hired at UAM,” said Mathews. “He has coaching experience in big-time Division I football at LSU, as well as experience at the D1-FCS level and in D2 at Ouachita Baptist… He has really hit the ground running and the players have accepted him with open arms.”

Kyle Manley was hired as the team’s quarterbacks and running backs coach, and since his hire, has been promoted to passing game coordinator. Manley comes to UAM after spending the previous two seasons as an offensive graduate assistant at Louisiana Tech University. While there, he served as an assistant to the offensive coordinator and assisted the coaching of the quarterbacks and running backs among several other office duties.

Manley is a 2008 graduate of Georgia Tech University with a bachelor’s degree in management. He is currently pursuing a master’s degree in business administration from Louisiana Tech.

“Kyle has really done a tremendous job in the short time he has been at UAM,” said Mathews. “Our quarterbacks, particularly Buisson, is getting coached on his footwork and mechanics more than he ever has, and I’ve already seen improvement there… Kyle is a really strong fundamental coach and has a lot of fresh ideas for our vertical passing game.”

OFFENSE WINS SPRING GAME BY ONE
Last Saturday (March 13), the UAM football team concluded its spring preparations with its annual Spring Game. The offense vs. defense style game resulted in a one-point win for the offense by a final score of 34-33.

Offensively, All-GSC selection Jywin Ceaser (Sr., WR, Marerro, La.) had five catches for 91 yards, including a 54-yard reception. Quarterback Scott Buisson (Sr., QB, Metairie, La.) finished the game 13-for-27 through the air with 205 passing yards with one touchdown. He also carried the ball 10 times for 54 rushing yards.

The UAM coaching staff liked the performance of transfer Greg Taylor (So., RB, Keystone Heights, Fla.) out of New Mexico Military Institute. He finished the game with seven carries for 26 yards and a rushing touchdown. Returning starter, Johnny Polite (Sr., RB, McGhee, Ark.) had five carries for 21 yards.

Defensively, Mathews was pleased with the play of Vincent Jackson (Sr., DE, Fordyce, Ark.), Joe Accelus (Jr., DE, Marerro, La.), Marcus VanBuren (Sr., DB, West Monroe, La.), Eric Crocker (So., CB, Stockton, Calif.) and All-GSC selection Carlton Johnson (Sr., LB, Panama City, Fla.).

“This was the most fun and interesting spring games we have had at UAM,” said Mathews. “And it’s to be expected with almost 30 seniors on the roster… It was an absolute brawl, real physical and fun to watch.”

PROFESSIONAL SCOUTS VISIT UAM
Scouts from the National Football League’s New Orleans Saints and New York Giants as well as hall of fame scout from Canadian Football League’s Edmonton Eskimos, Paul Jones, recently visited UAM’s indoor practice facility to perform tests on some of the active Boll Weevil football players.

“This is a great opportunity for our seniors to have exposure with the professional ranks,” said UAM Head Coach Gwaine Mathews. “Our pro scout liaison, Coach (Julius) Jackson, has done a tremendous job with coordinating these visits. He has great relationships with these scouts.”
