Box Score BATON ROUGE, La. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello football team responded from its season opening loss with a 31-7 rout of Southern University on Saturday at A.W. Mumford Stadium.
The Boll Weevils even their season record at 1-1 with its third victory in as many seasons over an NCAA Division I-Football Championship Subdivision. UAM defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff in each of the past two seasons. The Jaguars also evened their record at 1-1.
UAM had production in all aspects of the game with 371 yards of total offense, only 117 yards of total offense allowed, 149 punt return yards and a blocked punt.
In the first half, UAM pitched a shutout, holding a 24-0 advantage going into the locker room. Senior Johnny Polite started the scoring with a two-yard touchdown run with 10:42 left in the first quarter to cap a six play, 71-yard drive that used 2:35.
Senior Jywin Ceasar was responsible for UAM’s next six points with a 94-yard punt return for a touchdown with 8:57 left in the first quarter. It was the second longest punt return in UAM’s history. Ceasar finished the game with 143 punt return yards on four attempts.
UAM added its third touchdown of the first quarter with a one-yard touchdown plunge by junior Nakita Myles to cap a four-play, 38-yard drive that used 1:14. That scoring drive was set up by a blocked punt by sophomore Samel McClain and a 36-yard return by sophomore Eric Crocker.
The only score of the second quarter was a 30-yard field goal by freshman Taylor Pontius with 7:02 left in the half.
Southern scored its lone touchdown with 6:11 left in the third quarter on a six-yard run by Gary Hollimon after UAM failed to execute a fake punt from its own end zone.
UAM finalized the scoring with 1:23 left in the third quarter on a one-yard touchdown run by Polite to cap an 11 play, 76-yard drive that used 4:40. It was Polite’s second rushing touchdown of the contest.
Senior quarterback Scott Buisson led the rushing attack with 13 carries for a net of 101 yards to give him 11 games of at least 100 rushing yards in his career. Polite finished with 11 carries for 37 yards. Junior Greg Taylor added six carries for 27 yards, while Myles had eight carries for 17 yards.
Through the air, Buisson was 9-of-15 for 164 yards with no interceptions and no touchdowns.
Senior Joseph Lockwood led the Boll Weevils in receiving with two catches for 36 yards. Sophomore Damon Wicker had two catches for 32 yards. Junior DJ Stephens had only one catch, but made it productive for 46 yards. Ceasar, who had 12 catches in last Thursday’s season opener, was held to only one catch for 21 yards.
Defensively, senior Carlton Johnson and junior Jaramos Phelps led the team with six tackles each. Johnson added one sack for a loss of eight yards and 1.5 tackles for a loss of 10 yards. The Boll Weevils combined for 11 tackled for a loss of 49 yards and also collected six sacks for a loss of 33 yards.
Junior Blake Prince hauled in the game’s only interception and returned it for 31 yards.
The Boll Weevils begin Gulf South Conference play next Saturday, September 18 on the road against Ouachita Baptist. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. from A.U. Williams Field in Arkadelphia.
