Box Score CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Weevils’ second upset bid in as many weeks fell short tonight as UAM fell 34-20 at No. 2 Delta State.
Delta (6-1) wasted no time, scoring on their first drive with a short rush after driving deep into UAM territory. The Weevils (3-3) answered right back on their first possession. Damon Wicker found Kenneth Robey on the first play from scrimmage for a 28-yard completion. After the third first down of the drive Nakita Myles rushed on four straight plays to push into the Statesmen end zone to even the score at 7-7.
The Weevils sustained a drive at the end of the first quarter and into the second that gave UAM their only lead of the night 14-7 off another Wicker completion, this time to Willie Landers for 11 yards. Delta went on to score three touchdowns in the second quarter to retake the lead 28-14 at the half off a pair of short rushes after long drives and an interception return for the final score of the half.
Neither team scored in the third quarter, but DSU tacked on one final touchdown in the fourth off a 39-yard pass from Micah Davis for his third touchdown of the game to set the final score at 34-14. The Weevils had one more drive to close the game. With just under a minute thirty to play Wicker completed four quick passes to hurry the offense down the field. He connected on second and goal with Kenneth Robey for the four-yard touchdown pass. After a failed two-point conversion the score was set at 34-20.
Damon Wicker finished the game with 293 yards passing, but had three interceptions in the game. D.J. Stephens had four catches for 69 yards with one touchdown. Nakita Myles led the rushing 71 net yards and one touchdown.
Abraham Felton paced the defense with 13 total tackles and one fumble recovery.
The Statesmen finished with 526 total yards of offense on 76 plays. UAM finished with 386 on on 73 plays. The Weevils had four turnovers to the Statesmen’s three on the night, but Delta was able to convert those turnovers into points that went unanswered by UAM.
The Weevils return to GAC action next weekend as they travel to Ada, Oklahoma to take on the East Central University Tigers in a 4 p.m. matchup.
