Box Score MONTICELLO, Ark. – The Weevils (2-0) got started early in this one and never looked back defeating the visiting Texas College Steers 41-0.
UAM’s Blake Prince took the opening kickoff from the Steers 18 yards after landing deep at the Weevil two-yard line. From there Hunter Leppert and the offense took over. After driving the length of the field off four successful completions the GAC Offensive Player of the Week handed the ball to Damon Wicker who put the first points on the board with a 39-yard rush to the Steer goal line.
Then the defense stood up with a quick four-and-out to hand the ball back to the offense at the 50-yardline. With the short-field Leppert connected on first down with Jace Gandy for a 40-yard completion to put the Weevils on the ten before Texas College could catch their breath. This time Nakita Myles drove the ball in with a quick 10-yard run on third down to put the Weevils up 14-0 after the successful kick from Ryan Crowley.
The Texas College offense continued to struggle in the quarter. Andrew Vargas landed a perfect pass at the end of the first quarter after a promising first-down rush from Charles Jackson. Unfortunately for the Steers the ball sailed right into the outstretched hands of UAM’s Greg Wilson for an interception. The senior from College Park, Ga. ran the ball all the way back to the Steer end zone to put the Weevils firmly in the driver’s seat, 21-0 before the end of the quarter.
Leading into the second quarter, both teams traded possession back-and-forth, with neither team able to score again before the end of the half.
The Weevil’s offense came out of the halftime break just as they had to start the game and put up more quick points. Hunter Leppert completed a 56-yard pass to D.J. Stephens on the fourth play of UAM’s opening drive for the first six of the half and this was quickly followed by Greg Wilson’s second interception of the evening, putting the Steer deficit at 34-0, with 10:46 remaining in the third quarter.
With the game clearly in hand, the game’s biggest factor became the clock. Both teams kept the ball on the ground as the seconds continued to tick away. The offense had one last drive, however, as Hunter Leppert marched his team on a seven-play, 36-yard drive to tack seven more on the TC defense before the end of the game.
The Defense completed the shutout with one final stand as time expired to hand UAM their second win in as many games, 41-0.
The Weevils finished the game with 431 yards of total offense, 256 of those yards came off the hand of Hunter Leppert. The freshman finished his second game with one touchdown pass; the others came on the ground from Damon Wicker, Nakita Myles, and Kamrawn Russell.
The UAM defense came up with four interceptions on the night for 50 yards and two touchdowns. They also held the Steers to just 10 first downs on the day, despite TC’s edge in time of possession 32:32 to 27:28.
The Weevils will leave the friendly confines of Convoy Leslie Cotton Boll Stadium next week as they travel to El Dorado for the Boomtown Classic. Game time with the Ouachita Tigers is scheduled for 7:00. Live stats and radio feeds will be provided for those unable to attend at uamsports.com.
