Box Score CARROLLTON, Ga. - The UAM Boll Weevils fell in a hard-fought battle tonight with the West Georgia Wolves 21-5 in non-conference action.
The Weevils (2-2) scored the first points of the night with a field goal from Ryan Crowley after the offense was unable to punch the ball across the goal line.
The Wolves (2-1) were able to score their first points in the second quarter off an 83-yard punt return by Denarius Appling, his first of two on the night, to go up 7-3.
UAM got two more points off a safety after backing the Wolves up deep at the end of the half to cut the deficit to two, but were never able to close the gap completely.
West Georgia came out to start the second half and tacked up 14 unanswered points in the first three minutes of the third quarter to put the game out of reach.
Backup quarterback Kyle Manning played phenomenally well in his first start, but made one costly error at the beginning of the third quarter. An interception at the 24 yard line put the Wolves up 14-5.
They followed it quickly with Appling's second punt return touchdown of the game to set the final score at 21-5.
Neither offense came up with a touchdown in the game. The Weevils outplayed the Wolves in every facit of the game, except for the returns.
UAM posted 24 first downs to West Georgia's 10. They had 154 yards rushing, including 106 from Nakita Myles, compared to just 35 for UWG.
In the air, Kyle Manning went 25-for-39 for 225 yards to just 90 yards for the Wolves. Kenneth Robey had eight receptions to lead the Weevils for 128 yards on the game.
The Weevils will return to Convoy Leslie Cotton Boll Stadium next weekend as they host the Valdosta State Blazers in a 6:00 PM non-conference matchup.
