WEEVILS SEEKING FIRST WIN IN WEATHERFORDThe Weevils and the SWOSU Bulldogs have played in four consecutive years since both became charter members of the Great American Conference. The series has featured two games in Monticello and two games in Weatherford, with the home teams coming away with the victory on all occasions. In the inaugural meeting between the two teams, UAM beat SWOSU 35-21 in Monticello during the 2011 season. The next two years, the game was held in Weatherford with the Bulldogs winning 38-21 and 35-17. Last year, the Weevils beat SWOSU 33-14 in Monticello for their first win of the 2014 season.
LONGEST ROAD TRIP OF 2015 SEASONThis weekend's trip to Weatherford, Oklahoma is the longest road trip for the Weevils for the 2015 season. According to Google Maps, the trip from UAM to SWOSU is 496 miles, 52 miles shorter than last year's trip to Alva to face Northwestern Oklahoma State.
LAST TIME OUTUAM is coming off a 52-31 loss to Northwestern Oklahoma State last Thursday (9.3) at home in the 2015 season opener. It was the first college football game of the 2015 season to be played in the state of Arkansas. The Weevils controlled early, holding a 17-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, but the Rangers responded with a 31-point effort in the second quarter and another touchdown to start the third quarter for 38 unanswered points. That lead, plus five UAM turnovers, was too much for the Weevils to overcome. It was UAM's third straight loss in season openers. NWOSU scored 28 points off UAM's turnovers, two of those touchdowns coming with UAM threatening to trim the deficit to one score. The Weevils ran 87 offensive plays in the loss and totaled 418 yards of total offense. UAM's 31 points was the third highest point total in the GAC during the opening week. Senior quarterback Hunter Leppert picked up his sixth career 300-yard passing performance. He hooked up with sophomore teammate Jalen Tolliver four times for 78 yards, including touchdown passes of 13 and 20 yards. It was a career-high for Tolliver in terms of yards, and was his first career multi-touchdown game. Senior running back Nick Williams led the Weevils in receptions with five for 30 yards, while also turning in a team-high 14 carries for 49 rushing yards. UAM had four players with seven tackles in the loss. Senior Marquez Massey led the team with six solo tackles and also chipped in with two tackles for loss.
MCGEE ONE FG AWAY FROM 2ND PLACE ALL-TIME AT UAMJunior kicker Jamie McGee nailed a 36-yard field goal to open the scoring in last Thursday's loss to NWOSU. It was his 24th career field goal, one away from tying Dannie Baker (1976-79) for second place all-time at UAM. McGee is 24-for-32 (75 percent) during his UAM career, which is currently best in school history in field goal percentage.
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGSSouthwestern Oklahoma State opened its 2015 season last Saturday on the road against Southern Arkansas in a losing effort, falling 28-24 in Magnolia. The Bulldogs took a 24-22 lead on a safety following a blocked punt with 8:55 remaining in the fourth quarter. After holding the Bulldogs to a three-and-out on their next series, the Muleriders answered on their ensuing first down with a 75-yard touchdown pass that ended up being the game-winning score with 6:24 remaining in regulation. SWOSU was picked eighth in the GAC preseason coaches poll after finishing the 2014 season at 3-7 overall and returning 38 lettermen (nine starters) from that team. The Bulldogs are coached by Dan Cocannouer (21-43) in his seventh year at the helm of the SWOSU football program. The best record for SWOSU during the Cocannouer tenure was a 6-5 finish in the 2013 season.
THE LAST MEETING: UAM 33, SWOSU 14The Weevils snapped a six-game losing streak the last time they faced SWOSU, a 33-14 victory last year in Monticello in the fourth week of the season on the same day the University unveiled a life-size bust of its all-time winningest football coach, Tommy Barnes, inside the lobby of the Indoor Practice Facility. UAM forced five turnovers and scored in every quarter in that win. The Weevil defense picked off three SWOSU passes, including one in the fourth quarter that negate a 14-play drive by the Bulldogs. The Weevils sealed the win with a touchdown with 3:54 remaining following a muffed punt by SWOSU and fumble recovery by UAM's Byron Miller.
