WEATHERFORD, Oklahoma — The University of Arkansas at Monticello football team suffered a 50-20 loss to Southwestern Oklahoma State University on Saturday in UAM's first and longest road trip of the 2015 season.
The Bulldogs (1-1, 1-1 Great American Conference) took an early lead three plays into the game's opening possession on a 61-yard screen pass from Marc Evans to D.J. Jones for a touchdown. SWOSU went for two and failed, which allowed UAM (0-2, 0-2 GAC) to take a 7-6 lead on the next possession after senior quarterback Hunter Leppert hooked up with junior Trevon Smith for a 60-yard score and junior kicker Jamie McGee made the extra point.
SWOSU regained the lead less than a minute later with a four-play, 75-yard drive capped by a 33-yard pass from Evans to Jones. The Bulldogs never trailed from that point.
The Leppert-Smith tandem cut the UAM deficit to one touchdown on the final play of the first quarter, a 73-yard deep pass over the middle of the field on the second play of a 53 second drive. Midway through the second quarter, McGee trimmed the deficit to just three points with a 20-yard field goal to cap a 14-play, 80-yard drive that took just under seven minutes.
SWOSU scored a pair of unanswered touchdowns in the final six minutes of the second quarter to take a 30-17 lead into the locker room at halftime.
McGee was responsible for UAM's final score of the contest, a 38-yard field goal with 9:25 remaining in the third quarter. With his two made field goals against SWOSU, McGee moves into second place all-time at UAM with 26 made field goals. He is now 26-for-34 (76 percent), which is currently the best career field goal percentage in UAM history by far.
Senior linebacker Ofisa Kose paced the Weevil defense with 10 tackles, which marked the first double-digit tackle performance of his UAM career.
The Weevils return home for next Saturday's game, which is Parent and Family Appreciation Day against Arkansas Tech. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Convoy Leslie Cotton Boll Stadium.
